Alonte -> Help! Sevillanas Chord compases only (Apr. 7 2010 10:48:16)

Good news, I will start playing for a dance class.

Bad News... I need Sevillanas material thats just compases of chord markings.

Does anybody have material to 4 sevillanas with just chords? Mostly I could find are sevillanas with melody lines meant for 2 guitars but It will only just be me.

I have 1 which is the Mira La Cara y cara. Does anybody know at least 3 more? Song samples and chord chart?

If you're playing a sevillanas por cante, such as Mira La Cara y Cara you just repeat the same sevillanas four times- so you already have what you need (except the singer!)

Oh! So they wont expect me to have to play 4 different ones? Do you have any suggestions on what to play? I am trying to avoid those picado melody ones because I will get drowned.

If it's a sevillanas guitar solo then it is generally four different ones but not when sung. If they've asked for chords and compas only, I suggest playing the accompaniment that would go with singing- (easier for you to learn too.)

When I play for dancers I just play chords that would fit the song. I play each one in a different key, but to be honest I don't think they really notice! They are just looking for a strong beat and that the structure is correct. If you get the end of the copla in the wrong place then they DO notice!!

Thats a good idea. I'll give that a try. Maybe I'll have a sheet of bar measures with guides and play different chords. You guys count in 6 or 3?

Hi,

I found this http://www.ravennaflamenco.com/compas/sevillanas135.html page helpful when getting started - you can tell where you're at and if you're finishing in the right place!

I played along with a lot of cheesy old recordings of sevillana too - my teacher recommended 'El Adios' (stick it in iTunes and you'll find it by los Amigos de Gines or something). Dead simple (when you ignore the long intro bits) - Am - E7, with the occasional Dm.

I do the intro bit, then 3*3 beats of picado, then into chords for the rest. They seem to get on with it ok (they got confused when I was doing more tunes anyway) and it's a pattern that seems to work nicely whatever key..

Hope that's useful and not too basic!

Jenny

PS I tend to count in 3 but I don't know if that's right or not!

Okay... So I have been listening and I have been counting.

Salida and Copla I got it. But....

The intro confuses me... Some have 7 or 8 or 9 bars? So intros are not fixed??

Thanks all! I survived my first dance accompaniment session. I feel great! Thanks everybody! Everything made sense now...
