Ailsa -> help with golpe please (Apr. 3 2010 10:42:22)

I've been struggling for a while to get a decent golpe with my 'a' finger at same time as downstroke with 'i'. I've got the action, but the golpe comes a fraction of a second after the downstroke, which is worse than no golpe at all! Any suggestions of how to think about it to make it better? At the moment I'm just trying to think of doing the golpe earlier, but it isn't helping. Maybe I need to practise differently?

Thanks

A

Hi Ailsa,

Try not to think of it as two separate actions.

It all comes from the wrist.

So, as the wrist turns to pull the "i" down the strings, the "a" hits the soundboard at the same time in ONE action.

Just isolate and practise that bit on it's own, turning from the wrist.

See how you get on.

cheers,

Ron

Hi, try using a metronome . 60bpm but only do the golpe .
Whilst doing the golpe mime index down on the beat and index up off the beat .Your focus should be totally on keeping time with the golpe. After A FEW DAYS BRING THE TWO SOUNDS TOGETHER if that doesn't work i'm a Dutchman! Cheers .[;)]

[:D] what does that mean exactly??

I'm trying to get the hang of this technique as well.

One method I've been shown is to anchor the ring finger (a) on the soundboard. Just rest it there in the position it would have struck the soundboard.

Then play down and up strokes with the index (i) while counting 1 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 3 + etc... When you're relaxed and comfortable play the golpe with the 1 downstroke and then hold the (a) finger against the soundboard until you have to play the 1 beat again.

It's working for me so give it a try. The only problem I have now is cracking the finger nail because I was playing the golpe too hard for too long, so I've had to file it right back.

think of it as a scissorlike motion

Here's .gif of what I mean (Ailsa, you might remember this from an old thread)

Yeah thanks Ed. I've got that action, it's just that the golpe sounds too late, and having it late is just really wrong!! I'm making a sound with my 'a', but I think I must be starting the action too late. And for some reason I just can seem to adjust it.

Maybe you want to think of i+golpe as an entity distinct from i alone, practicing it on it's own?

Chiste de Gales -> RE: help with golpe please (Apr. 5 2010 13:33:29)

You could simplify the technique:

Point your ring finger towards the golpeador. Move your hand (not the finger)
to make the golpe. Strum with index as your hand descends.
