Skai -> Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Nov. 23 2004 9:15:07)

Hey everyone,

All these months, I've been dying to play this piece I heard but haven't had any luck with finding a tab for it. Neither did I get any response from then tab request thread.

I'm looking for the Zambra on Paco Pena's Essential Flamenco Recordings CD, composed by Nino Ricardo. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Skai [8D]

I remember your post, and remember having a look around all the usual places.

Your best bet, having trawled the Internet and assuming you still get no response, is to get in touch with Paul Magnussen. Paul is a former student of Paco's and is the flamenco correspondent from Classical Guitar Magazine. He is currently working on a flamenco method with Paco and probably knows more about the available transcriptions of Paco's work than anyone else. I wouldn't be suprised if he's already transcribed it himself.

I will PM you Paul's email, let us know if you have any luck.

Jon

Hi Skai and Jon

It's probably not exactly the same as PP version, but here's a version of Zambra that I do, that may be of use....

Enjoy [;)]

Wow, I'm soo sooo thrilled!! [:D]
Here it is, the best Zambra I've ever heard.. (Alright I've only heard 2 but it IS great.) Maybe I'll write it out in tabs if anyone wants it?

Thanks to Jon, Paul and everyone,

I see from this that Paul came up trumps then [:)]

Would be good if we could get Paul on the foro actually, he has a wealth of knowledge on flamenco. His column in Classical Guitar magazine was fascinating.

Here's the powertab file for the piece with some minor modifications to the score to make it closer to Pena's version though I still can't get it to sound as good..

Well, I'm obviously coming late to this discussion; but yes, I do have Paco's version of Ricardo's Zambra written out: Paco taught it to me.

But it's in staff notation, not tab. Anyone still interested?

Hi Paul,

Realising that you were Paco Pena's student, I was wondering if you have the tabs for his famous Zorongo?

Thanks

dina2010 -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 10 2010 11:43:41)

Yes, of course, I am interested in. Please post it :-). Thank you very much in advanece !!

Paul Magnussen -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 10 2010 16:14:05)

OK, here it is. Sorry there isn't any fingering on it, it was done in rather a hurry.

It can serve as a teaser for my forthcoming book, Flamenco for Guitarists. This is a development of the articles I've done over the years for Guitar International and Classical Guitar. It is intended primarily for people who already play the guitar, but know little or nothing about Flamenco.

Part 1 explains what Flamenco is and goes through the different styles. It is also a metatutorial, in that it reviews the available material (books, recordings and videos) and points out what I consider the best. There are many musical examples.

Part 2 consists of all the interviews I've done with the World's great flamenco guitarists, with examples of their music.

Part 1 is unlikely to be of much interest to those on this forum, and for that reason I'm considering publishing the two parts separately.

Not to hand, sorry. I'll have a dig.

Thanks Paul !! For sure your book will be very interesting and useful.

Here is Guitar Pro Tab of Ricardo Zambra. Later I will upload another version in PDF format, but first I must make the file smaller ;-).

dina2010 -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 11 2010 14:31:42)

Here it is.

By the way, Paul, do you have some other unpublished scores of Paco Pena ;-)?

Paul Magnussen -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 11 2010 16:56:38)

Lots. Some are things he taught me, some from his courses in Castres and Córdoba, some are my own transcriptions, some other people gave me — of varying degrees of accuracy. A few of the transcriptions for the Montoya/Ricardo album we worked on together. Most of them are just scribbles at the moment.

But the people that have most are Hans van Gogh and Ricardo Mendeville, Paco's assistants at the Rotterdam Conservatory.

My early transcriptions from done with an open-reel tape recorder at half speed. They're fairly accurate, but now of course I can get them much better with computer technology. If I ever publish those old transcriptions I'll go back and revise them.

dina2010 -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 11 2010 21:36:28)

Paco de Lucia has De Lucia Guestion Publisher, Juan Martin his Flamencovision and many other flamenco guitarists are publishing his own music but Paco Pena who is really great master published till now only a few items. That is really bad ;-). Could you post here something from your collection?

mark indigo -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 11 2010 22:34:48)

i have tab only version of puertatierra (tangos) and palmas y guitarras (bulerias) i made myself from the recordings, i could post them here if anyone is interested, but they were done ages ago with a crappy tape player and probably need heavily correcting - i'm not selling these very well am i?[8|]

mark indigo -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 12 2010 20:45:47)

i will have to dig them out and scan them etc.

if you don't see them in a couple of days bump the thread to remind me!

gerundino63 -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 12 2010 22:32:41)

Hi All,

Thanks for the Zambra....very nice!

I looked into the intro tonight, and the fingers slide a lot on the 4th string.
It gives a bad sound that is not to avoid.

BUT If you play the same notes that are on the 4th string, on the 3th string the sliding sound is over.

so, to make it a bit more clear, start the Zambra with the pinky on the 5th fret first string, and the index finger on the 2th fret from the 3th string. I listened closely to the recording from Paco Pena, and I am 95 percent positive Paco does the same thing...you can figure out the whole intro this way.
Good Luck![:D]

No. He plays the octaves on the 1st and 4th strings. Believe me, I wrote it down from his dictation.

You are of course at liberty to play it any way you want.

gerundino63 -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 13 2010 4:18:39)

Oke Paul, you get it from him in person, so no discussion about that[:D]
Listen to the first chord I can hear it too.

But does he do the rest also as is written down in the pdf file , and the melody from the bass line in the first 9 bars on the 4th string, and not on the 3th string?
Can you help me out there?
TIA!

Elie -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 14 2010 6:18:07)

Thank you guys [:D]
I've always loved this piece of music , and actually I played most of it by ear
so thanx for the tabs [;)]

mark indigo -> RE: Request: Zambra (Nino Ricardo) played by Paco Pena (Dec. 16 2010 11:05:52)

page 1

i did this about 10 years ago, with only an old beaten up tape player, and the tape was a copy (from my own cd, which someone has since borrowed and i never got back), so not very hi-tech

it might be littered with mistakes for all i know, i haven't gone back and checked it or anything. and lots of it will be educated (or not so educated) guesses, i don't actually know which fingers he used for the rasgeo's etc. or exact left hand positions for some chords.

so post up your corrections and alternative solutions, and don't give me a hard time about it! (hey, at least i'm not charging 20 Euros for it!)

I don't know if Faucer has tabbed it, if he has i haven't seen it

it seems i was still obsessed with counting back then, as i have pencilled the count above the tab.

i was still trying to get my head around the "odd six"/"medio compas"/"extra six" thing back then too, so the numbers reflect my solution at the time (i hardly notice them anymore)
