Barney -> An unlikely gig! (Nov. 19 2004 10:12:12)

Hi all,

Thought i'd share with you a quick account of a gig I did last night, which I was intially a bit dubious about - it was playing at a 'Beaujolais Noveaux' evening at the Wookey Hole Inn, Somerset .....[Spanish guitar on a French night?!!] Also being at 2 days notice, and over 2 hours drive after work on a Thursday, I debated it for a while then decided to take it. [B&B being thrown into the deal may have swayed it!]

Anyway, it turned out to be one of the best gigs this year. It was not what I expected (background music to dining) but very much a more 'introducting songs and being in the limelight' type gig. Also to my surprise the audience were very different to what I'm used to (that being audiences in Plymouth and Cornwall) and when I asked if there were any requests, instead of the usual "The Rodrigo thingy" or "The one from the Deer Hunter" [those are some of the more 'sensible' ones I've had!] I got "Fandagos de Huelva" shouted out!

Very unusually [compared to the extreme South West - must be something to do with the location, maybe being near Glastonbury the folks are a tad more musical?!] the most popular numbers of the night were Alegria and Zambra Mora.

What's more the night culminated in a jam session with an extremely talented Scottish pianist who was staying there, and included a piano/guitar Tangos duet and also a very an impromtu but highly enjoyable "Entre Dos Aguas" after quickly telling the pianist the chords!

Anyway, just driven back to work [don't day jobs just get in the way sometimes] - time for more coffee....

Cool, there is nothing like that "good gig" feeling; one day I hope to have it from a flamenco gig of my own.

Barney, that's great!

Sounds like good fun. Best when there's a bit of banter.
