I was so very sad to hear about the passing of Philip I have been a student of his for the last five years and spoke to him just a week before he passed away, he allways let me film the lessons so that i could study them in detail, he was a superb teacher and a pleasure to know, I will treasure the video footage i have of him. The flamenco world has lost a true gentleman. Dennis Evans.

Please excuse my tardiness but I have just read online of the death of my guitar teacher from my youth Philip John Lee .I studied Flamenco Guitar through that long hot summer in1989 when he lived in west london. Philips lessons were always enjoyable and over the years I have listened back to the taped lessons for enjoyment. When Philip was in full flow he was a monster player and yet as
a person a kind ,positive and generous soul.
I lost touch with Philip at the end of that summer when he went off on one of his many travels but last year I found his website on line ( I recommend a visit ) and got in touch again. We arranged a lesson last summer yet unfortunately due to gridlocked traffic in south london I did,nt make it.Philip very kindly sent me a personalized lesson and we arranged in march to meet up this year.At no time during our conversations or e-mails did he hint at his illness or that anything might be wrong,he was always a very upbeat person .
Now I,ll never have that long awaited lesson although that is small beer compared to the loss to his family and friends.
I urge people to hunt out his records and remember him I personally am always proud to say I was one of his pupils.

Dear dennis.j
Is there any way you could up load the footage of Philip playing at all as philip was a great player and although I have alot of audio tapes of philips playing and lessons I think it would be great for people to hear and see this much under rated player.

A special tribute to Philip John Lee is published in this month's British Classical Guitar Magazine including members of his family and friends. In particular there is a very personal and moving article by Paco Pena. It can be ordered directly at "www.classicalguitarmagazine.com".

His brother Simon promised as well to put up some music on the internet for download. Please check regularly.

Phil was my much beloved teacher to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude. I would like to pay my respects and offer prayers for his life. Can anyone direct me to the location of the roses in Kew gardens where his ashes were scattered, please.
I apologise for being so late to find out the news of his passing and offer my deepest heartfelt sympathy to all those who knew and loved him.
If anybody would like to get in touch to talk about our experiences of him, please feel free to contact me via email:

That album was/is incredible.

I picked it up in a charity shop in brighton uk in 1991.

I recently ripped it to flac from the LP,no filters,it still sounds awesome out and about.

I chatted to him on and off over the years, i do miss him, an absolute legend.
