Tehrani citizens were expected to flock to Tehran’s National Grand Hall to watch their favorite guitarist’s performance after his first appearance here five years ago, but the balconies on the second floor were mostly empty.

That's because Arash has been spamming the folks back home, telling them not to go!
(You happy now?)[;)]

Does that mean there were people attending to the concert?

The high ticket price (300,000 rials about $30) could be the main reason, while the organizers aimed to provide facilities for everyone, especially for students and families.

Wonder if Paco could really pack them in despite the price.

Juan Martin is definitely one of the most known Flamenco guitarists among the Iranians mainly because most Flamenco guitarists have started with his books.

As far as I know, his previous performances have been very welcomed among the young Iranians. However, I personally think that people did not show a lot of enthusiasm due to the occasion on which he was performing (the opening ceremony of Iran's 25th Fajr International Music Festival). This is the celebration of the Islamic Republic in Iran which has killed, raped, imprisoned and tortured the Iranian people for 31 years now. In fact, a lot of Iranian and foreign artists boycotted the festivals this year in a sign of solidarity with the Iranian people and their movement to rid of this brutal regime. I wish JM had done the same.

Whether JM is a good Flamenco player or not, or as one of the forum members said “there are better Flamenco guitarists in Iran than JM”, I think he would have a bigger audience under different circumstances.

I thought the annual Iranian International Music Festival went back further than that?

I'm pretty sure Paco Peña used to play that festival back in the 70's.

Maybe it's just been hijacked by the new political regime?

cheers,

Ron

After the concerts performed by the Flamenco guitar virtuoso Juan Cristóbal Martín in 2004 in Shiraz, the Peña performances will be the greatest happening in Flamenco in Iran.

I would love to go to Iran someday. Ojala that regime gets it's ass kicked someday soon. There should be a special planet for Teabaggers and officials of the IR to kill one another on and leave the rest of us alone.

buleria74 -> RE: Juan Martín plays in honor of Tehrani citizens (Mar. 1 2010 6:20:57)

This time, his performance was not welcomed as the previous time.

None of the serious flamenco players here attended that concert.

All those I know were sending sms to each other making fun of JM.

Last time his performance was a disaster. This time it was mixed with some

political stuff that people really don't like. he made pro-gov propaganda in many

peoples opinion, that's it.

That's too good to pass up. Excellent! It looks like we Americans are polluting the airwaves of the world...[8D][8D][8D]
