With thanks to Suzie on flamencodancer... not an excuse for political soapboxing please[:D]
quote:

Democrat John Kerry likes to play fiery Spanish flamenco music on his guitar, the candidate revealed late Saturday in an interview on the Spanish language variety show “Sabado Gigante.”

“I play some Spanish music, some Latin music, some popular music. Any music, but I like flamenco,” the elegant Massachusetts senator told the emcee of the variety show, which is broadcast to an estimated 100 million viewers in 42 countries. “I can play ‘Recuerdo de la Alhambra’ and a few others,” said Kerry, who took time out in the final frenzied days of the presidential campaign to court some seven million Hispanic voters, members of the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. He hasn’t had much time for musical pursuits on the campaign trail, Kerry lamented. “I’m still learning,” he said. “I don’t have much time to practise, and my fingers aren’t moving very well,” he said. afp

I think I would pay to see that!! Instead of the debates I think Kerry should have played some guitar and Bush could have done some cante.

Just why is Recuerdos a flamenco song...?

Let's be fair though, anybody who says.......

has at least picked up a guitar, "pumped nylon" and possibly tried flamenco or classical. Certainly if they complain about not enough practise time and uncooperative fingers. [:D]
That's a pretty common lament amongst the lot of us. [:)]

The "other guy" is at a disadvantage since you need opposable thumbs to play the guitar. [8D]

He'll have plenty of time to practice now.

So will a lot of people, if the US economy keeps going the way it has been in the first four years.

The UK news has been saturated by the US election.
My ears, having reached the limit of news hype....
I started to wander off...

I live in (near) Stonehaven = A haven or shelter for fishing boats, on a stoney beach.
Stonehaven is near Aberdeen = A dwelling on (over) the River Dee.
Aberdeen is in Scotland = The Land of the Scots.

Where does Ohio come from?
or Idaho?
or Iowa?
or Oregon?

Or even in London...

Pimlico? (Land of the Pyms)
Elephant and Castle?
Isle of Dogs?

All these weird names....

Who thought of them, and why did somebody say....
"This is a cool place...let's call it Omaha!"

hmmm...just me drivelling on again..LOL!

Ron

Ron,

I don't have an answer, but I can tell you how Portland got its name. Portland is one of the largest seaports in the world. By combining the word "Port" and "Land", you get Portland.

I live just a few miles from the city "Oregon City". Oregon City was at the end of the Oregon Trail. I guess when the settlers got there they were so tired they couldn't come up with a better name.

Miguel de Maria -> RE: Kerry, a flamenco guitarist? (Nov. 3 2004 21:17:16)

Ron, these, I believe, like Illinois and Kickapoo--are Indian names (what we now call Native American). So is Indiana, in a different way... :)

Ron.M -> RE: Kerry, a flamenco guitarist? (Nov. 3 2004 22:46:15)

Mike,
I can understand "Kickapoo" from the local inhabitants probably keeping dogs, but I really had to wonder about all these unusual state names.
New York State, Mississippi, Missourri, Virginia, New England, Georgia, Maryland, Montana, etc all seem logical...

But Arkansas?

As I said before, somebody must have got up there and said "OK guy's....How about ...let's see......Wyoming?....anybody like that name?)

As for Pimlico (Land of the Pyms)....then that's the Londoner's problem LOL!

cheers

Ron
