Honestly, I love Juan Martin's methods. I used one to learn flamenco in the 80-s, then moved on to learning by ear.

However, I think I'll give that costume a try. I'll shred one of Freud's books I had to purchase and read for my undergraduate class... finally that book will be properly used. [:D][:@] So, next video I do will be in that costume!

He does read it....and then cries all the way to the Bank!

Then looks at his diary to check where his next international gig is inbetween handling a call from the BBC for a TV or Radio spot or interview.

Juan has been a pro entertainer for years and years and has thick skin for criticism I'll bet.

Count me among those who used and value JM's method--it was the only one in the music store when I was bitten by the flamenco bug. I cannot tell you how pleased I was to find that thing in the bin the day I wanted to begin flamenco study. But, after first listening to PdL for some years, I knew this wasn't the "same thing." I was curious how such an ostensibly prominent figure in the music could be so...obliquely different. Was I missing something? After reading some past posts here, I learn there's possibly a story there. But, I won't begrudge JM's marketing approach.

But, thank you Mr. Juan Martin for providing me my first flamenco elements. [:)]

You said it all, Ron. Juan Martin may not be turning the flamenco world upside down but he has succeeded where many others have failed, and he's honestly not a bad musician.

There are two main things about Juan Martin aside from the fact that he has provided some great ground breaking material to help people get started on their Flamenco journey.

1. He's not a bad musician as mentioned in the above quote. But he really doesn't do anything new with it and if you like "recalentaos" (reheated leftovers as they say in Spanish) then Paco Pena does this whole genre much better. His solo work such as Andalusian suite is nice stuff if somewhat and / or completely predictable. I guess if you are starting out, you look up to him, once you get good you look down on him, such is the world of JM.

I realize I have now crossed the dreaded Paco Pena reference line and someone will automatically rip this thread to bits, say something crude or vulgar and inevitably then get their post deleted so, start your engines boys!!!

2. Juan Martin is under the sad, tragic illusion that he knows how to accompany singers and dancers. If he were to stick to solo guitar he would have much more cred but as seen on some youtube vids, he has NO CLUE!

After reading this forum? He definitely will have... (and with his playing he must have).
I think JM jokes are ok (as is about Nunez or any other guitarrist), and none of them are personal or against his books. People called some playing by "moderns" as nonsense, which is worse than any JM joke and nobody was offended. So why always the need to defend JM?

Well he's well over 60 years old now.

Sabicas didn't really do all that much "new" after he released his first couple of albums. Nor did Niño Ricardo...

I loved the last video the best.

I think a bit of traditional Russian dancing would have gone down well too...though probably better with a foreign rather than home audience.

I love the smiling to camera....will have to practice that.

Actually, this link may be funny only to those who are not familiar with the current situation in the former Soviet Union. I bet this old lady has absolutely no money (all stolen from her in the 90-s by the crooks that ran the reforms) and this is her only chance to survive. She doesn't look happy, does she?

When I left my country in 1995 my family sometimes could not even afford to buy bread.

So, this is not funny to me.

On a similar note of "reality versus what you see"...

I have just been listening to a radio programme about the terrible and devastating effects IEDs have had on our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, with heart-wrenching stories from weeping wives talking about their husbands dying while she is now left with three young children...and what a good guy he was...always happy and kept everybody cheerful and up etc..

Then a statement by a Politician saying that the Taliban are purely evil and ruthless and have no respect for human decency..

Well, excuse me, Mr. Politician.....but isn't it just simply because they want to WIN?
..or at least frustrate those they see to be their enemy?

Another said that sometimes by analysing the bombs, the evidence can sometimes lead them to finding the culprit and bring him to justice under law.

Hell, why not just SHOOT him? [&:]

The British mentality sometimes pisses me off in their refusal to believe anything other than that war should be played by the rules and anyone deviating from them are "utter cowards and cheats".

It puts me in mind of something or other I heard about England playing a tennis match against some other country in the early days of the game and getting beat rotten.

Their argument was something about that their opposition were not "true gentlemen" and had been "practicing". [:D]

So the same goes for all the players we here do not rate, but have cut out successful careers for themselves in the music industry....

Their message is simply..

TOUGH TITTY! [:D]

Things are as they are...not as you'd like them to be.
