Hi Guys,

Any advice on which 'software' flamenco metronome to use on a Mac.

So far I've downloaded an iPhone App from BeatVibe but find once I get going the iPhone isn't really loud enough and the beat gets lost so I'm looking to run something on the iMac that will sound through my monitor system.

So far, I've come across this one from Graf Martinez.

So before I buy, if you have any other recommendations or considerations then let me know.

Cheers all.

the iphone speakers are good for nothing. if you already bought the beatvibe, you should get the most use out of it.

just use headphones or plug it into some speakers.

My experience with the Graf-Martinez metronome is that it is quite capable but in MacOS 10.4 and 10.3 the interface was quite jerkey and unresponsive. I also had an older type G4 machine in those days, so that could also have played a role in the metronome's performance.
I've stopped using it but perhaps that nowadays it has become more reliable (OS 10.6).

I like the Oscar Herrero Metronome which also comes with Mac editing and programing software, but it costs a lot more.

G.

I have the Graf one, both an older version and his newest. Neither keep steady time at all and are unfortunately worthless to me. I a
running windows seven on a modern machine with the latest QuickTime.
His website has several recomendations to improve the timing but come on, how
uch computer should a metronome require? I like his DVD(except you can't read the tab) but the metronome should not be purchased IMO.

You should get the iflamenco app for your iphone it is phenomenal then you should just run your phone through a stereo, thats what i do, works out great

Sean.. dont waste your money with compas metronomes... Jut listen much to records and play along with em. Copy all the strokes and play along.

For practice I use a metronome with just a straight beat like.

beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep

Thats all you need. Everything above 15Euro is too much IMO.

I also use my mp3-player with compasloops for practice.

For macosX I use sometimes TapNTune. Free, simple, absolutely enough.

I think using the beep beep beep metronome is important. Every classical musician form Suzuki students to when 90 year old Horowitz used them. Tomatito uses one.......

Records are great, but they have issues.

Where's Mc Guire when you need him????????

But don't listen to me. I'm high off my ass on coffee stuck in an airport and I've nothing better to do than taunt you guys.

Did you know that Vladimir Horowitz ate Dover Sole everyday for lunch?

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Flamenco Metronome (Jan. 26 2010 15:53:07)

I have absolutely NO IDEA what Stephen (estebanana) is talking about. Metronomes are evil. Doit is right.... listen to recordings and play along.[8D]

Thanks for leaving your blanca with me Stephen, I will try not to scratch it up, but it will be hard because she really wants to be played and she likes it rough. To get to Kansas you know all you have to do is click your heels together 3 times..... beats the hell out of airport security.

Thanks Dorothy.

So you paid good money for an iPhone, then you paid good money for a flamenco metronome, so the way I see it, you need to complete the puzzle and get the most out of your setup.

Playing to recordings are always fun, but good luck in trying to customize them.

you guys got me all confused. i use all three methods to be safe. metronome, play along, compas loop, and to be really sure i got it down, play it in person with some attractive palmeras to see if i get nervous and lose it.

one thing i've noticed, people who practice with a metronome never get thrown off by shaky palmas and often do the leading.

They are evil..... evil I tell you.

at_leo_87 -> RE: Flamenco Metronome (Jan. 26 2010 20:41:44)

that second video is kinda creepy. i would never use those metronomes. if you don't a perfectly flat surface, your life is over.

i use fruity loops on my pc for a metronome.

Snappy made a new kind of metronome. Here is a sample. Its much less evil.

sean65 -> RE: Flamenco Metronome (Jan. 26 2010 21:25:45)

Nothing like a Metronome to polarize opinions....

I had some lessons with a jazz guitarist Jimmy Bruno a few years back and he advised NEVER use a metronome unless you want to sound stiff.

I think the visual effect of the flamenco metronomes is useful at my stage as I'm not used to counting anything other than 3/4 4/4....

Compas loops sound like a good idea, keep it real(ish).

por medio -> RE: Flamenco Metronome (Jan. 26 2010 22:35:16)

I believe that the trick is to be able to play WITH metronome AND sound groovy.

But hey, there's always more than two ways to get from A to B isn't there?
