konradk -> Beginners Flamenco Guitar (Jan. 18 2010 0:17:01)

I recently visited eBay and got totally confused
by the deluge of available guitars advertised there
It seems like one has to pay anywhere from $700 to $7000
to get a guitar with a string that might sound decent.

Unless you live within driving distance to Spain,
there seems no point using the web to buy a guitar
since travel and custom duties etc are all mandatory,
not to mention airline terrorism ...

The thought of shipping a guitar unseen untried makes no sense.

Living in Toronto, Canada limits the choice to almost zero.
The cheapest "generic" I've seen locally but not tried is around $450

.. so I'm thinking of just continuing with my "basic" classical
using lower tension bass strings to get a bit of a snarl,
.. maybe even reset and lower the bridge a tad ...

any ideas would be greatly appreciated ...

I can vouch for Bernal guitars - I have a student model (around £500 GBP) that is great for the price.

p.s. I would not buy a guitar untried.

konradk--there are a plethora of guitars out there that would be a good beginners flamenco guitar and yes it is best to try out a guitar. here is something to think about. i have an almost brand new (it is a 2007 that i bought this past summer and have put on 25 hours of playing time--and new tuners) esteve 5F flamenco guitar (spruce and sycamore) that is sitting in my closet collecting dust. if you are interested in trying it out i would be happy to mail it to you and if you like it you can buy it ($450 american). if not, you can ship it back. you can try it out for a week or two or three so you can you get a feel for the guitar. if you are interested send me an e-mail.
