I thought you might like to see this.

Yesterday was Louis_B’s 13th birthday so his mum decided to make a special cake in the shape of a ‘playable’ flamenco guitar.

Her task was to bake and decorate the cake.
My task was to make a neck, bridge and base assembly to enable strings to be tensioned.

We used his Manuel Rodriguez C3F as a template so it’s a rather large cake!

The result:
- It didn’t play as well as a more ‘traditional’ flamenco guitar – golpes were VERY messy!
- The action was far too high – more like a classical.
- The sound was not particularly loud – maybe it needed a sound port?
- The icing is thinner than the C3F finish.
- Maybe the world’s first 12 hole bridge to be used on a cake?
- Much, much tastier than the timber version.

that's one of the coolest things i've ever seen. is the bridge and neck made out of wood?

happy birthday louis!

The bridge is made from 2 mahogany French window offcuts glued together. I mounted it on a wooden block screwed to the base board so I could tension the strings. Finished with a drop of olive oil

The neck is made out of a piece of pine from an old bed.
I built it as accurately as I could so it has a scarf jointed head, ply head veneer from my cajon build, Spanish heel, old tuners from Louis' C3F.
Again finished with a drop of olive oil
Strings by D'Addario[:D]

Cake luthiery at its best and cheapest!!!

Seriously though, I enjoyed fabricating the the neck and bridge so much I'm very tempted to try a real build.

Cool cake!! This will make a nice memory for your son. Maybe you could make him a real real guitar for next year although that will be hard to top the year after.[:D]
