Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum so thought I'd introduce myself, say hello and fire off a few questions.

I've been playing guitar for many years, mainly electric, nothing too serious, just pick it up every now and then, bang out a few riffs and put it back down.

I've always loved Flamenco but always considered it out of reach for myself. Not sure why. Perhaps it's all the mythology about only proper gypsies being able to play it with any conviction.

Anyway, I had a moment of clarity whilst sitting in Los Gallos in Sevilla last week watching some pretty cool playing. Why not give it a go, even if I only scratch the surface I'll be happy.

So I'm now back in London and the (not so) proud owner of a budget flamenco guitar. You really dont get too much for £400. Had to choose between a Rodriguez C3f and an Alhambra 3F. Not much of a choice but I went for the Rodriguez. Just sounded a bit more Flamenco (although, very boxy).

I'd like to hear from others about what books they've found useful, interesting etc. I'll be taking lessons once a week but it's always nice to have some reference books.

Happy New year to you all

Sean

As long as you're in London, there's an Englishman name Johnny Martin who has published some books and videos on how to play flamenco guitar. He puts them out under the name of Juan Martin. Excellent for beginners.

Hey welcome Sean!

You are exactly the kinda guy I like to see joining this Forum.

There are all sorts of courses and books and DVDs out there, but I'm not sure which ones would appeal to you.

Juan Martin seems to be a popular choice amongst a lot of beginners.

I dunno really.

I think you'd be best first of all trying to join something like the London Peña

These guys will see you OK I'm sure.

Listening and watching is definitely better than any books IMO.

And this Forum is really good for answering any questions and just generally hanging around.

cheers,

Ron

PS: Don't worry about the guitar too much as long as it is reasonably playable with a Flamenco-style string height above the soundboard you'll be OK.
