Bogdan1980 -> Paco tour (Dec. 22 2009 7:01:30)

Is anyone going to see Paco in Europe from US? If he's not coming to States I gotta go see him. I am trying to figure out what is the easiest place to fly to from DC?

So if anyone has got plans to go I'd like to hear from them.

Also is anyone aware of tour 2010 to be extended to US?

Bogdan

Interesting, this reminded me to look up if he is coming nearby. Turns out he will be playing in the very town I live in May - the 2nd last concert of the tour.

I often travel vast distances to see bands I like, so I can appreciate the impulse. If anyone on the forum (where I've been intensively lurking for a while now) wants to travel a very long way to see him in Basel, Switzerland on 2 May, I'd be happy to buy you a beer or other beverage and show you around town a bit. I can also help you with where/how to get tickets - seems like there's plenty of good ones left at the moment.

(Can I now ask a horribly basic flamenco newbie question? As that I am - a newbie. What would one of his concerts be like? I have a very strong preference for flamenco music without instruments beyond guitar and percussion. The group is listed as "Paco de Lucia & Sextett". What would they likely play?)

Bogdan1980 -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 22 2009 8:46:46)

I was actually thinking about Switzerland. Don't need EU visa for Switzerland.

I'm guessing one can buy tickets online somewhere, right?

tantrum,

Well, for sure it's not going to be like an intimate Jerez peña.

This is "Concert" Flamenco...

The one I saw had keyboards, bass, percussion and harmonica.

Not my kinda stuff...

But don't miss probably the last opportunity to see Paco de Lucia himself "live"...or you'll never forgive yourself. For sure.

Just go with an open mind and no preconceptions about anything is my advice.

You can tell your grandkids about it when you're ancient. [:D]

cheers,

Ron

Bogdan,

You can also bank all your savings there and save it from the Welfare seekers and those jobless Canadians and Mexicans tiptoeing across the border at night to get at it. [:D]

cheers,

Ron

Shroomy,

I know! I know!

I was in Tarifa in the early 70's and one day, looking at the local newspaper at 5pm, read that he was appearing solo at a recital in Cadiz only 100km away.
I made it to the bus station for 5.30pm and was told the last bus for Cadiz had left at 5.10pm.

"Otro mañana...6.15am..." said the bored clerk.

Our Cadiz province residing member Phil was at that concert and said it was unbelievable.

Ah well, you win some, lose some I guess..[:D]

cheers,

Ron

In Switzerland he's playing Basel on 2 May and Zurich on 19 March.

See here for tickets - http://www.ticketcorner.com/eventstore/control/searchresult?navigationSearch=combinedSearch&searchtext=paco+de+lucia&eventsearch=on&checkeventsearch=on&skisearch=off&fromDate=&toDate=&searchtextcity=&x=9&y=11

Actually, Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, which means the visa requirements are pretty much the same as for much of the EU. Are you not a US citizen? I didn't think US citizens needed to apply for a visa to enter the Schengen area, but it's not my field of expertise.

Well, this is what I'm figuring, so I'll no doubt pop along for a look! [:D]

Ron.M -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 22 2009 12:42:25)

Wow!

Around $130 for a good seat...

That's like, um...a dollar a minute! [:D]

Get it while you can...that's the motto!

cheers,

Ron

Stu -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 22 2009 14:46:26)

is he playing in London???

tantrum -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 22 2009 23:34:53)

Go to http://www.pacodelucia.org/flash_ingles.htm and then click on tours for the dates.

I don't see London. Most of the dates are in eastern Europe for some reason.

Many of these actually come to work, it's the insiders that I'm worried about. But thanks for the concern, I prefer to keep the savings under the mattress.

Tantrum, thanks for the ticket link.

Bogdan

Pimientito -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 23 2009 6:13:56)

I cant believe thats all the dates. There are only 17 concerts. There must be more to be confirmed in the new year. Paco loves playing London so I doubt he would leave that off his tour list. Also there are no Spanish dates yet. I am sure those dates will be revealed closer to the time. It also seems inconceivable that he would not play in th U.S. I would wait before a little bit longer before arranging to travel half way across the planet. There is no way that Paco would limit himself to 17 concerts on his last tour.

Martin -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 23 2009 6:44:17)

Lots more dates up now, London in November ( nearly a year away) and plenty in Spain

I saw him with his band a couple of years ago and he did some typically amazing PdL guitar playing, and there were a couple of bits of nice singing, but there was a lot of band and especially a lot of extended harmonica solos. I don't know why Niño Josele was even there because any time you might have liked to hear a contribution from him there was another goddam harmonica solo. [:@]

But you won't know if you don't go.

Bogdan1980 -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 23 2009 9:22:26)

London concert idea is much better. I went to UK last June with no problem and it's quick from DC. But maybe you are right and US will show up.

Sorry to disappoint, but I think that date is from 2007. It's a little confusing, but the website has 2010 dates at the top, then dates from previous years underneath.

Here is a page for this old London concert... Last FM page

henrym3483 -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 23 2009 11:47:12)

Where does it say its paco's last concert tour?

has he actually confirmed this?

xirdneH_imiJ -> RE: Paco tour (Dec. 23 2009 11:56:15)

it doesn't say it anywhere, and while i'm hoping it's not the last opportunity to see him, it's likely he won't be touring much in the future...maybe if he ever does get out another album he might consider touring with it if his health is fine and his playing abilities are still there...

Oops...that must be one of the poverty stricken venues.

(Well, let's face it...Zurich's not what it was, these days...)

Warsaw, Poland ....over $200 per person per seat for the good ones!

(Hmm...let's see...audience 1000 to maybe 2000...dammit where's me calculator!..[:D])

cheers,

Ron

PS: D'ya think when Paco finally shakes this mortal coil, that fibres from the waistcoat he is wearing in the cover photo of "Luzia" will be on sale on eBay?

A single strand mounted on card... $1000?[:-]

Can you please give details?

Chilli Fingers -> RE: Paco tour (Oct. 24 2010 10:59:52)

Its expensive yes, but it is paco and if its one of his last tours or the LAST...its hard to say exactly what its worth. Imagine how much someone would have payed to see bach play for the last time? It would probably surprise many what people will be prepared to pay, and do for a ticket. I would possibly lick fresh turd off of the bottom of someones shoe if i knew it was his last concert and i couldnt get a ticket elsewhere. But thankfully there are tickets still available....for now[:o]
