Stoney -> Malaguena - the classical version info request (Dec. 2 2009 11:04:15)

I'm putting this in the tab section because I'd like to find the tab to this piece. However, my real request is for information.

I would like to know - of all the various interpretations and versions of Malaguenas, who is the writer / composter of the definitive classical version.

I can't give a link to the youtube vid because youtube is blocked here at work. Jose Feliciano among others is known for playing this version. Although it is not Flamenco, it's about as close as you can get IMHO in classical music. Beautiful piece.

Any classical guitar fans who could shine a light on this - it would be appreciated.

On another note, I wonder if there are any folks here who appreciate guitarists from the latin music world. (not the Ricky Martin, Shakira watered down for the dumb masses stuff but real latin guitar stuff)

Stoney

Hi Stoney,

The composer Lecuona is the guy who wrote it.

It's a great tune and there have been many versions of it.

Here's Paco de Lucia when he was just about 21-22 years old when I recorded this live off TV in 1969!

Forget Jose Feliciano etc...enjoy the Flamenco version...and be amazed!

cheers,

Ron

Thanks for the recording - interesting - he starts out with a flamenco Malaguen~a, then switches to the classical one. What he plays is very close to the way Sabicas played it.
