I heard a great stand-up English comedian called Jo Caulfield on the radio broadcast of her live show in Edinburgh this year. She said.. "I went to visit the Castle this afternoon.... Yeah..I know...very Touristy thing to do.... But how can you be in Edinburgh and NOT visit the castle? I mean, that would be like going to Glasgow and not having a deep fried Mars Bar... Or going to Paisley and not getting stabbed...." [:D][:D] Another.. "Actually, my husband, Stuart, is Scottish.... I met him when I first came to London and he was working as a street performer. During the conversation, I said that London was just SO expensive. He said ' Aye...no half hen!.....D'you know when ah first arrived here in London five years ago, ah had twenty quid in ma pocket... I saw it on the lonely planet once - what does a deep fried Mars bar taste like? and don't they put Ketchup on it too? I also saw on Anthony Bordains show that in the US you can buy deep fried cheese cake! It all sounds quite disgusting in my opinion!

The Chinese Restaurants do deep fried Banana in batter, served with ice cream and sweet syrup and I like that....so I can't see it being too much different actually. Isn't there somewhere around that part of the world that does deep fried slices of pizza? ....pure class...like Paté and custard![:D]

Yeah Pim, That's Glasgow too. Back in the 70's it was only the posh coffee cafeterias that did it in an oven. I've had deep fried pizza and chips many times. Excellent stuff. What you have to realize, is that Glasgow Fish & Chip shops deep fry EVERYTHING! Fish, Chicken, Ribs, Mock Chops, Pies, Sausages...you name it. If you gave 'em Caviar, they'd mix it with batter and breadcrumbs and deep fry it. Truffles too! No Mercy. The main secret and antidote to the extra fat absorbed is in consuming Irn Bru at the same time. (This is where the English and Foreigners go wrong IMO.) Another point is that most of these early Fish & Chip shops were run by Italians, who had a knowledge of good, ordinary food. So the batter was usually very light and had their own "secret" tasty ingredients. They always had two hot fat vats running at two different temperatures, so after being finished off in the hottest, all the fat drained off and you were left with deliciously dry, crispy coated fish or whatever. A lot of stuff I've had in Spain has been practically sauted in low temperature cheap Olive oil for a long time and is oily and greasy and usually served cold with the spare oil seeping out as perhaps some kind of sauce! These Glasgow Italians knew what they were doing. Sure, there are the home-grown tossers who just jump on the bandwagon, knowing nothing of deep frying and just want to get a money making takeaway business going. You throw the stuff from these places in the first litter bin you find. Like the London kebabs you get in Edgware Road! [:D] cheers, Ron
