I dont know whats the right place to post this but anyway...

Thank you McJason! Huh, what a walk through and inside look of the cante accompaniments. I didnt take part of this challenge, but Im listening the entries and reading your rewies and feeling that I start to understand something whats going on when accompanying. So many good ideas!

What a great challenge!

Thats the real reason to do these challenges. The discussions that are sparked by the submissions are always enlightening. Norman's comments are great too. If you notice the points where my comments and Norman's comments are in agreement... i.e. "Cambio variation" , Salida ("Ayeo" as Norman referred to it)... getting "into" the harmonies there... A student could pretty much make a "rule book" out of those things. It shows that there is indeed a protocol that people can learn and that its not something you either "have" or don't.... I wish I had a resource like that back when I needed to learn Cante at first...... The efforts of people like Norman, Simon, Ricardo and others on this Foro..... they are making some great info available for students who really love flamenco and want to learn it in a meaningful way.

We have endured some weirdos busting in to criticize us recently..... when that happens its usually because we are doing a good thing and for some reason that can attract negativity....

Like Norman said at the end of his scoring and comments in the Cante Challenge Entries thread......
quote:

This forum is a very good thing, Simon.

Hosting websites and forums like this isn't a cakewalk. Things don't just take care of themselves. Just because this place is "free".... please don't take it for granted. It is a very special place and that is why its really the only public forum that I participate in.

To all of you that post here regularly, question askers and answerers alike.... a huge thanks to you. Without questions... who needs answers?

Cheers,
J

Yeah, Thanks Jason!

I listened through all the entries while following your and Normans comments, and I plan to do more of it. It's in the middle of the night here but I'm so inspired by all of this, the challenge, the comments, the insights.. It got frustrating too because I couldn't pick up my flamenca and play.. I had to take it out on the electric.

Even though I've listened to tons of superb accompaniment this thing has expanded my outlook on what guitar and voice can be in a whole new, tangible way.

Thanks also for the video-series you did with your luthier on youtube. I enjoyed it very much. Cheers man!

We will do more Cante Workshop/Challenges....

I think it might be a good idea to take some donations from members here to offer Felix a little $$ to record some more tracks for us. I will donate the studio time necessary....

I completely agree with Aleksi....!
Thanks Jason and Norman for the insights in the beautifull world of accompaniments!

Still curious Jason if you've added a palo secco as you added as a suggestion.

JasonMcGuire -> RE: thank you Jason! (Oct. 9 2009 1:18:53)

I haven't.... it was sort of a joke, Lets make the winner do a video for us... [8D]

Bags me be admin, please, please! Pretty please!! [:D] It doesn't cost me anything but the time to send a few mails and upload a few mp3s, so I'm happy to continue - unless anyone else wants a turn of course.

Absolutely we should reward Felix for his time and skill (though generous of you Jason to donate the studio time [:)] ). Perhaps those of us who value this challenge could donate to the Foro Fund, and Felix could be paid from that?

aleksi -> RE: thank you Jason! (Oct. 9 2009 1:56:51)

I could easily give few bucks. Good advices are coming so couple of dollars is nothing from those. If enough people will donate little then its good.

Ailsa,
I wouldn't mind to take it over for a couple of times. Just let me know!

Of course! There's no reason why i should keep the job all to myself. There's the composition challenge coming up if you would like to do admin for that one?

That's a great idea! I can't wait to donate.

Couldn't remind having said that, or anyone else, that it is all on your shoulders, you've done a great job to keep everything in line.
I am more than happy to contribute in this way, instead of uploading some none-flamenco-ish tryouts.

I was just re-reading the composition post and it made me laugh again.
I'll start a new discussion once the Cante Challenge has been concluded, there were some issues on palos etc., even a CD for the Spanish goverment [:D]
I'll make an overview of the issues and than we'll have to decide and set a date, and set the rules for the contestors and judges, so no discussion afterwards is necessary. (Although I always have to laught about it)

XXX -> RE: thank you Jason! (Oct. 11 2009 6:21:34)

This thread has the right title to express my gratitude towards Jason and Felix and all others for making this possible, and the judges of course with very useful comments. Jason everything you said about my entry was true including strings, soundport ;) and "time killer intro" [:D]!! Just one minor detail would be the chord at 57s. Its very unclear played i admit, but its not the usual C chord (which i play in 4 voicings btw), but the aequivalent to Gm7/Ab as we know it from the A key. Its unclear because i go down too much with the index-golpe.

I agree to the judgements mostly, although i have to say i didnt compose this as a "live accpomaniment" but more a studio production to an existing track. In a live situation, I wouldnt have played in B, and i would have filled more space with rhythm. Rhythm is something that my entry was lacking, instead it had alot of sloppy playing. I simply didnt manage to workout strumming patterns that could retain the dark mood of this tuning AND performing a rhythmic base. My aim was to match the cante with right accents and chords first, and then work on strummings. My rasg were not in shape coz the last time i saw a dancer was one month ago, and when im at home i dont practice rasg, so... [:D]

Well it seems to have started already so no need for me to participate anymore.
