Ron.M -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 7:48:10)

Congratulations Henrik!!

As Sean says, it's not easy to play along to a pre-recorded track.

Bursche had some really great falsetas going there!

I also liked Anders and deteresa's stuff too even though he got a bit out at about 1:10 (sounded like he dropped 2 beats?), but he got back in again.

Sadly, I'm not a big fan of alternate tunings on cante accomp.

Really valuable commentary by Jason, Norman, Ricardo and Sean.

I think one of the lessons I learned from this is that folk have a tendency to play "too much"...ie not giving the singer room to breathe and making the guitar too prominent.

But I think that's probably made up by two things..

1. Folk have a tendency to "keep playing" to keep themselves in compás..and
2. The general style of playing "western music" is to provide a solid backing with chords and one that's hard to shake off.

Anyway...

Fantastic challenge!!

It'll take me weeks to go over all the entries and comments to really digest it all.
There's a wealth of good info to learn from in this challenge and is great archive material for students.

cheers,

Ron

PS: I accidentally mistyped Jason as "Jaso" and thought it looked a really cool Spanish name! [:D]

xirdneH_imiJ -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 8:48:30)

some interesting facts about the challenge:

see this topic for the table: TOPIC

end result:

1. Duende (Henrik) 152 points
2. Bursche (Max) 140 points
3. xirdneH_imiJ (Richard) 134 points
4. Anders 126 points
5. Deteresa (Andy) 121 points
6. Deniz 118 points
7. Florian 115 points
8. Henry 72 points

- Henrik was an undisputed #1 overall, however Bursche and xirdneH_imiJ both placed first with two judges and Deteresa also managed to place first with one judge. In all cases these placements were ties with another contestant.

- If we take out a judge's results it won't affect the end results greatly, the first 3 places wouldn't change. But if you look at the table you can see had we removed Sean's scoring, the 4th-7th places would mix up greatly. Similarly with Ed's judging, without him it would've been a tie between Andy and Florian.

- If we counted Jason's vote twice (as he's sort of a father figure in this challenge and accompanied this cante before any one of us had heard it), only Andy and Deniz would switch places.

- If you do not use your real name on the foro, you have a better chance of winning a challenge like this, 4 out of the first 5 placed contestants use something else than their real names. [:D]

- nothing else comes to my mind :)

Congrats to henrik, very well deserved win and congrats to everyone else who entered.

id like to thank those who gave feedback on my playing, and what was said about the track being messy and out of compas was right on the money. my attempt was sub par to say the least.

i know ive got a lot to work on and maybe i should'nt have entered the thread, but i just wanted to have a go at it as it seemed something interesting to do with my time.

suerte

henry

Attaboy Henry!

At least you had a go.

OK, so you pick yourself up again and listen and learn.

It's hard to absorb this stuff and do an intensive Uni course or even just work!

Beauty is IMO....it's not a race to get done in a year or so...

Flamenco is a life interest IMO.

cheers,

Ron

Ailsa will be uploading it soon. She has had it since the evening we announced the challenge. She also has a .pdf of the TAB and Standard notation of the performance that you guys can print out and study if you like. Thanks to Pacodgarcia (Nigel) for that.

The prize that you were competing for is a 1 hour session with Felix over Skype.

You won't really be able to accompany him but he will review the winners performance and offer some suggestions. You can spend the hour asking "ALL the questions you ever wanted to ask a flamenco singer."

cathulu -> RE: **Florian's Video of the CANTE CHALLENGE entrie** (Oct. 11 2009 13:28:12)

All of you guys were amazing. This was such an invaluable exercise for me to listen in and enjoy. I hope you all put out videos like Flo and Richard of your performances so we can study them along with the audio performances. Thanks Flo for your video, don't delete it please, keep it on youtube!

Henry, you were kind of out of your league here, but I am glad you decided to participate. There were parts of your performance that were pretty decent and you were in compas for a brief while if I recall correctly, and when you were it sounded very good. Funny, when you were I assuming tapping along to keep yourself in compas, even your taps were not very even. If you can get your internal rhythm clock in sync, you will advance tremendously. This seems to be your greatest challenge, and I recall from the intermediate challenge you and I attempted, that was your greatest challenge there also. But I would say you have made progress since then for sure!

Congrats to the winner Henrik.

Thanks Jason and Felix for making this all possible. I very much look forward to Jason's video and tab.

Jason has very kindly put the video, tab and midi file on his site - see the links below.

The sheet music is also available in the Tabs section.

mrMagenta -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 13:58:21)

Grattis Henrik!

I know you've been interested in accompaniment for some time. Singers are few and far between in our parts, but you've come so far in this despite that. I'm really humbled by your achievements. It would be truly interesting and exiting if you found someone to accompany regularly. I'd love to hear what you'd come up with. I'm confident that it would amount to a nice life injection to swedish flamenco. jejejejejee :-D

We might need to kidnap Felix :-)

Congratulations all of you! Very inspiring challenge.

Flo I like it...good sound on that video.

However the real flamenco way is to put your stogie between your strings behind the nut [8|]

Unfortunately I can't do a video right now...still waiting to get my 'pooter with the webcam up and running

Ailsa, the audio is severely delayed on the YouTube version.[:@] I hate it when YouTube does that. Go ahead and take that down. it won't help anyone really with a delay like that. Everyone please refer to the links I just posted above.

You will need QuickTime to view the video.

Me too - awful! It's gone.

JasonMcGuire -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 14:26:07)

Now..... perhaps after a time for reflection, further discussion and review of the videos etc... some of you may want to make a new VIDEO showing the conclusions you have arrived at. Maybe a version morphing the best of the various submissions. Its not another challenge just a follow up. This of course is open to anyone, not just the ones who participated in the initial part of the challenge.

Florian -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 14:39:19)

hey i hope felix gets to see them to, i look foward to and welcome his feedback also

and big thank you to him...lets hope the cante accomp challenges never stop...allways here allways alongside guitar challenges

JasonMcGuire -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 15:51:40)

Felix will be home tomorrow. We will give him a day to rest and then I will get his comments on your submissions and share them.

ps..for mine please show the ..i think the eq in the audio might have been too much

duende -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 20:50:38)

thats a great video Jason, some cool chords there, now i´ll check out Flo´s video

duende -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 20:56:39)

thats also some cool stuff going on. And the guitar sound realy good.
very good Flo.

i tryed to make a video last night but the environment was way to noisy and i couldnt focus. so i gave up. I´ll try again tonight or tomorrow

JasonMcGuire -> RE: **CANTE CHALLENGE ENTRIES** (Oct. 11 2009 20:56:50)

I didn't get too wild. I wanted it to be a fairly conservative accompaniment for the purpose of learning. I couldn't help but adding a couple of personal touches as well.
