Hola,

I've been wondering .. Is it possible for a left handed person to play as a right handed guitarist?

And is there anyone you know that is doing that and he's a great guitarist?

Yes its possible.

My left-handed son has always played right-handed guitars.

We made a deliberate decision for him to do this when he first started at the age of 8 because of the lack of choice of left-handed guitars - its probably much easier if you start young.

He's not bad for a 12 year old[:D]

yes it is , i am left handed and play right hand...when i started i didnt know that there were left handed guitars all i could find was right handed

Im left handed but play right. In my opinion i doesnt matter at all.

If you can´t play you cant play and guitar is a difficult instrument so it wont help you
to play a lefty guitar. Unless you extreamly left handed.

I only write with my left......everything else is with the right[sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]

ok good .. so it seems that i'm not the only one playing like that ..

because i'm having problems my picado, so i thought it is because it isn't my dominate hand or something like that.

I am mixed handed. Right: Using a knife, scissor, playing soccer. Left: Write and play guitar. I could not even think about playing right handed. It feels awkward to even hold the guitar neck in my left hand [:D] just like it felt wrong the first day. So... it just depends on you and your feeling.

Hi Berha!

Don´t you know Michio?

From his Vita:
"Apart from that, Michio's obsession with his left-handedness turned into another source of trouble. Truly convinced that he actually had to play the guitar the opposite way, the young student filed the nails on his right hand off the very day he was admitted to the conservatory. What followed were at least ten hours of practice a day to literally start from scratch. After having passed the intermediate exam - as a left-handed guitarist - the nail file was produced again and the whole process reversed. Michio had proven to himself that he could do it and was thence content to continue as a right-handed guitarist. Definitely years of Storm and Stress !"

I'm left handed and play right handed. When i first went for lessons as a 5 year old my teacher handed me a guitar...I held it left handed, he switched it around and I've been playing this way ever since.

Is the earth flat or round???? This goes in the same direction. One shall give em 1000 slaps on his naked back for this question!

Do you need only your right hand for playing a guitar? Man,... that only counts for jerking it off! Both hands are needed no matter which hand right and which hand left.

Yes Doitsujin you are correct..... BUT, the right hand drives the sound and is the Engine as far as producing sound out of the instrument goes.. so you could be at a slight disadvantage if you are a lefty cause your brain is wired left dominant...
I thought it was a perfectly valid question.

I don't think that it matters at all whether one is left or right handed.

Consider this. Are there left handed pianos, violins, saxophones etc.?[;)]

The brain is able to adapt to different situations. Thats why it works. But that doesnt mean that "it doesnt matter at all", because it could be, and it probably is, that some lefthanders *would* be more comfortable with lefthanded instruments. Lefthanded pianos would be expensive and you cant resell it, most violinists play in orchestra where they wouldnt even accept lefthanders "for optical reasons".

So... you can learn righthanded. For some it is possible, for some it is not possible at all. Consider this: I wouldnt have chosen to play lefthanded if it wouldnt feel more comfortable, because it has disadvantages in other fields (testing guitars).[;)]
