Guitarrero88 -> Right hand pain (Oct. 5 2009 9:58:57)

Hi guys,

For the last 2 weeks i have been experiencing weird pain in my right hand, it is like my muscles there ache.
Have not ecperienced this before, it might be because i have practiced very intense and did not keep my right hand as loose as it is supposed to be.
It seems like my muscles are shortening especialy my P, i cant make the L(mirrored) without a little stretch.

After doing some research i found some info on tendonitis and stuff but i doubt that one, also i have found a stetching excercise.

So now i was wondering, did any of you guys ever had these muscle aching and idea that some muscle were shorter then before?
And also what about warming up for hands, do you guys do any particular warm up before even begin playing or just begin warm up excercises(on guitar) right away?

This is actually pretty common - if you push yourself too hard! Right hand movements for playing guitar are very different than most daily movements...both hands for that matter. So if you push yourself with these different and new movements, especially without warming up, utilizing muscles that were not previously stressed, the end result will be pain and cramping. I honestly think that you need to feel a little discomfort to know that you are practicing properly, but it must be minor and you have to know when to stop. Pushing yourself harder will only hurt you more in the long run.

I agree--it's the best way to tell if you are getting a good workout that will lead to improved technique.

a couple of weeks ago i had an intensive session playing about 4 hours straight, since then i've had some discomfort in my fingers and unfortunately i've been feeling a worrying loss in stamina in both hands, i just get tired too easily, i wonder if it's because of that session or something else...

Even though you say a little discomfort and that it has to be minor, I don't know that discomfort is an indicator of proper practice. Obviously, other factors have to be considered I realize, but if anything discomfort is more a sign of improper rather than proper practice

Its like feeling sore after going to the gym - if you feel just as relaxed coming out as you did going in, then chances are you didn't accomplish much. No pain no gain. But pain is bad news for the hands when playing guitar, so a little discomfort is not only common, but should also be expected. Sometimes Ill do scales just with barred chords and purposefully look for positions that are uncomfortable and make my hand sore. Then I work on these chords/positions until they become easy to play and no longer make my muscles feel any kind of discomfort. This also makes the stuff you've already learned easier to play too.

Yep,.. pretty common thing.... Just go on and when it hurts too much, cool down and take a break. Within some days-weeks your hand will get used to that and you don´t have anymore pain. Nobody does warming up exercises... Just be a man and go through the adaption process. Ah...before I forget, if you only ignare the pain you could get cronic disease.. so just push it to a certain point and not further.

Well I mostly ignored my pain, cooled down when it hurt too much and went on playing immediately.... I have no problems at all today..

Thanks all,

Was just worrying a bit to much i think.
In a year of flamenco playing i had not really experienced pain in my right hand so i was looking on the net and read about all these cronical diseases hehe, i think i just need to relax and just play but not overdo it.
The last week i was so focussed on where the pain could come from that it wassnt fun to play. Today i felt it up to my shoulder so i decided that i just need to relax more and have fun.
ke thanks again for replying guys.

Worrying is symptomatic of problems which we should not simply sweep away under the first convenient carpet. If I may, you should have an orthopedist look at your hand, Guitarreo88. I wish I had done so a year ago when my tendinitis first started to painfully draw my attention, and eventually calcified requiring surgery.

There is no proper advice you should take on this Foro, save for the encouragement to seek a physician’s opinion.

If you enjoy playing guitar, those two hands play quite a critical role, and you may want to try and keep'em healthy.
God’s speed and good luck.

Guitarrero88 -> RE: Right hand pain (Oct. 8 2009 12:38:55)

Aj that sounds bad.
So is the tendinitis completely away now?

My knowledge of tendinitis is not great but with all physical pain i know one should listen to their body.
It is a quite common problem of guitarists i read on this site

http://news.guitarojam.com/musicians-health/wrist-pain-and-tendinitis-in-musicians-70/

Now i have been thinking of going to a doctor but i'm not someone who would call their doctor very fast.
But on the other hand i just cant do without my music and i would like to enjoy it for many years and i hope others will too so i am going to make the visit.

Much thanks and i hope your hands are ok now and will stay ok.

God bless.

I know the feeling, amigo, I believe and it is my experience that we -men- are healthy and have no significant problem or condition until we wisit those bad-luck-bringing doctors.... [:D][:D][:D]

Seriously, see one. In fact, I called my doc yesterday, to thank him again and report that exactly 3 months after the surgery (and after months when my left index was as stiff as wood) i have resumed my one hour practice every day. I warm up for a few minutes before I dare claimbing scales and stretching into awkward chords, and all is now well.
