I'm trying to record my challenge entry (not that I'm ready, just wanted to listen to myself recorded and practice that way) and I'm having problems getting a good recording. Either the guitar is too soft, too loud, over loading the recording or all of them together.

Any tips/tricks to setting up a proper recording? Like what distance do you place the mic from the guitar, do you play loud or soft? How do you set the mic gain? Any post-processing compensation?

i put the mic 8-12 inches away from the guitar and play like i normally do.

are you using windows? open volume control then properties, then recording. from there you should be able to adjust how sensitive your microphone is. it's going to take a bit of experimenting.

what software are you using?

Using GarageBand on a Mac.

Well...it depends on what kind of mic you have.
I'm definitely no expert but..

If it's a dynamic mic like an SM57 (non-condenser), you can get very close to the guitar with it but you might have to roll of some bass frenquencies (EQ). I've had good luck with these pointed at the 12th fret as close as possible to the guitar. Near the soundhole might really be too bassy.

With a condenser you can get a bit farther away, like maybe a foot or so, and point it more at the soundhole.

If it's a mic with a cardioid pickup pattern, point it directly at the instrument. that's about all I know [:D]

Oh and play exactly like you normally do. You can boost the volume/gain as much as you want but that won't change the attack and sound of your guitar...basically if you played too softly you will still be able to tell.

If you are using a condensor mic, room placement may make all the difference. Try and find which room in your house has the best acoustics and natural reverb then just experiment with the placement of the mic. As far as distance of the mic itself I would have to agree with Leo here and say around 8-12 in away from the guitar and not necessarily over the sound hole.

Thanks for the tips. For now it seems like adding a bass roll off improved things. But I think indeed the room I'm in is not ideal, but that involves moving my computer which is not straight forward as just adding bass roll off...

I'm using a condenser mic.
