RTC -> Mechanical Tuner Advice (Aug. 20 2009 19:42:49)

I am in need of replacing the tuners on my S. Castillo Blanca. What are the most important featurers I should look for? What price would a adequete set should cost? I want some that would complement or improve the instrument.
Look forward to your sugestions.
RTC

I'd say the action is the only really important feature. I bought some alessi tuners once and they looked great and worked superbly. They are expensive though, as they are handmade. You could probably get some Gotoh's or something that work just fine and cost about 30 euro.

In the inexpensive range, I have bought both Schaller's and Gotoh's, which
both seem very good mechanically. However the Gotoh's look nicer. I have
them on both of my PDM guitars now.

RTC:

In addition to what they say above, I think you also want to go for a lighter set of tuning machines.

Common/popular good brands in addition to what's already been mentioned include Fustero and Allessi. You can find most at http://www.lmii.com

There's another company that makes good tuners called Rubner and you can really customise the look too. (e.g. when I buy from them, I plan on getting brass with ebony buttons and black rollers).

I have som questions which I'd like to throw in:

What about gear ratio?
Is a higher ratio really better? Or does it only help you string your guitar faster?

And other than going with an established name, how do you judge

Thank you very much for all of the input. Do tuners go by sizes or are they all standard, I just want to make sure I order the right ones.

If you look at the lmii site you'll see that there are different spacings for the rollers. Most are pretty standard now, but check it out to be sure.

I can't tell the difference when tuning with either Schallers or Gotoh's
and they are different ratio's.

I favor $70 Schallers because I can't fathom spending more on tuning machines than every other component of the guitar combined...
