Well I was very nervous starting to get ready to get a soundport in my guitar.
At first I wanted it to try it on my old guitar, but I have put that one for sale, so it had to be perfect from the first time.

I've experienced a little bit with drilling on some wood and a calabas to get a feeling of it and eventually prepared the guitar, took a deep breath and .....

IT WORKED.....

I wanted to sand it with the Dremel but luckily I first tried it on the piece which was cut out and the Dremel sanded to quick to much, and therefore I used 600 sandpaper which worked just perfect.
Afterwords I used some Turbo glue to finish the edges and it look allright.

So now I'll be restringing the guitar again, which had to be done anyway because I had those Daddorio strings with black trebles, and I didn't like them.

Last time I had tried Luthier strings, which I liked, and now I am gonna put Conde Harmanos 735 strings on it.

I'll let you know if it worked out for me the same as for the other "hole-lovers"...[:D]



The diameter is 35mm.

RIVM in the Netherlands has already announced "the hole pandemic" and advises the stay in house and practice...
In the meanwhile I took the liberty to put some people to work and clean up the inside, and whilst doing that I could re-decorate the inside [:D]

But.... I like the soundport!!!

It's not as big difference as a thought it would be, and thats a good thing because I was afraid "all" the sound would come out of the hole and that it would feel unbalanced.

Hahaha....sometimes it takes me a while to really enthousiastic [:D]

I just re-stringed the guitar and it really opens up...and gave me a big smile on my face.
Hopefully the strings settle down pretty quick so I can play a little and tell more about it.

Also I just used a knot in the strings at the saddle in order to improve the brake angle, don't know if that will make a difference in sound also....we'll see.

Funny though that I had a discussion this morning with my 73 year old neighbour, who also had experimented in his teens with soundports. He didn't like it because the "reverb" was gone [:D]...

I believe that part of the world seems to be a complete (financial) hole [:D]

YIHAAAA....the hole is fantastic....

Anders, thanks for bringing up the whole discussion about soundports. I wouldn't even have thought about it if it wasn't for 10 page discussion with all its Flamenco-fire.
And ofcourse all the other ones who went before me, I am just a follower
[:D]


What I noticed, is when I play in my living room its an improvement, but when I played in the stairway hall in our building, with a lot of tiles, it makes a hudge improvement....

it was rather easy actually....
Masking / Drilling / Shaving / Glueing....I believe all it took 20 minutes.

Did you use a circular drill?

yeah, it's pretty easy. just really, really scary. i just wish mine came out so beautifully.

i dont know what the drill i used is called. i'll post a picture of it later today. plus a made some reinforcements, which was easy too. i'll post pictures of that also.

wow! im so impressed. can we get a close up?

and yeah the difference in sound is small. but BIG at the same time. the more you play it, the more you realize it.

Here's a closeup....and the tool I used. It has several different diameters, the smallest 25mm, than 35mm upuntill 65.
The wood in the drill is not from the guitar although, if I would have done it on my Alhambra 3F, than it could be the case [:D]

I didn't reinforce it, actually I wouldn't know how to do it...but can always be done later on I suppose.

Now I am wondering...if I drill a hole on the bottom part where the guitar rests on the leg...will I be able to feel more resonance in my body

I loved the smell of wood while drilling and now I have the urge to build a guitar myselves, and that'll probably take some time to temper that feeling, thanks Anders! [:D]

But seriously, I really enjoyed it. Especially the chance to ruin the guitar was quite present, and normally I would ruin it, but it didn't, and that made the whole hole-thing even more special.

And if we don't like it anymore, than we just by another Stagg guitar [:D]

Surprisingly enough it's called a hole saw. It's mainly used for making the holes in doors for installing the doorknob.

it's a weird one though. it has a pilot drill sort of thing and then a spiral looking thing for the main cutting part. i haven't been able to find a picture of it online. it cut really smooth and fast. better than those circular ones with teeth.

This hole thing is getting to me. I'm resisting an urge to take a drill to my guitar... Maybe if I practice a bit more on that intermediate challenge I'll get that drill, finally, together with a chainsaw... That will certainly stop the agony!

Man that looks good. I think I may take a saw to my C3F and see if that helps it sound a bit better :)

Sorry I meant to respond to the post from KOZZ. The device in his photo is called a "hole saw", I don't know what tool you used but if you post a photo I can probably tell you. What you used sounds like some sort of milling burr.

no that looks like a really old school device. i'll have to take a picture of it but it's in my basement and i dont want to run into any ghosts or dead bodies right now so i'll do it tomorrow.
