Question for you guitar makers:

Intuitively, it has always seemed to me that sticking plastic tap plates on a large area of the top could only deaden its vibrations. The old maple plates could conceivably be thought of as part of the bracing, but plastic?? Hardly seems to be an acoustical material.

And yet, there doesn't seem to be any harmful effect. What's the story?

I think golpeadors do have a small effect on the acoustic properties of the soundboard but it is minimal compared to the protection offered. They are very thin, about 1mm.
