Somehow I don't think you'll either figure out how, or find the time...[:-]

But that's just me, as a cynical foro admin. [:D]

But then, again...Prove me wrong dude. (Sorry, I'm watching "Bill & Ted" [:D])

(Believe me, I will be the first to be delighted!)

Surely in 25 years of performing and teaching you must have a little 2 minute recording somewhere?

cheers,

Ron

I don't know about groaning, but don't forget Nino Ricardo humming along with his playing all the time.

Wow!
I somehow completely forgot all about that!!

Good post!

cheers,

Ron

PS. Have you found that recording yet?

Pie (as in Spanish for foot, not the delicious dessert ) is now more important than ever in Flamenco. In fact it is taught and practiced by most professionals as a completely essential element of flamenco like palmas.

I totally agree. Here pie (foot tapping) is considered very important. When you play Fandangos de Huelva with a singer, they watch your feet and expect that you do a pie on accent.

Another thing about this brain versus nobrain thing: To me, rythm or compás is like dancing. Do you think about how you dance or do you just dance away?

Ricardo -> RE: Foot tapping different palos (Nov. 14 2009 14:14:34)

One should be able to play fine without tapping the foot. However, I have not yet met a player that had a solid groove and feel, no matter what style, that could NOT tap the foot if asked. There are times the foot is important for having a tight ensemble.

Sadly I have met too many players that cannot tap a steady beat, and it shows in their playing. The same folks usually talk negatively about metronome usage.

What's the 2-step for bulerias good for anyways? I mean just tapping 1-2,4-5,7-8,10-11. I heard from one person it's a good help for a dancer, from another that other than Paco de Lucia nobody really does it...

I know the same rhythm of clapping used to be done for cante. Is it outdated now or does it still have an important function? Is it worth practicing?

Yeah John, I would agree that Paco used that as an integral part of his performance on that Bulerias.
Very effective it was too!

I'm not tallking about tapping all the way through like that, but most guitarists will tap here and there without thinking about it, just as anyone may tap their foot to a pop song.

ie.. They don't DEPEND on it.

Even in that video where Emilio Maya casually tries out Anders' Blanca, he does some of the 1,2, 4,5, 7,8 10,11 tapping when playing a bit of Bulerias.

Others do it too, not necessarily all the time.

But to say guitarists who tap their foot invariably go out of compás is ridiculous.

cheers,

Ron

Hi John,

One thing I DO like about it is that you can use this same pattern for ALL Bulerias falsetas instead of having to shift from every second beat to every third beat as the phrase sorta dictates.

That's my experience anyway, but it's hard to do while you are playing unless you've learned it that way so you do it without thinking.

I just stick to 2's or 3's myself.

BTW John....are you playing full time now?
How is it going? Is it mainly dance classes and some shows...or do you do solo stuff as well?
Is the wife fairly happy with the arrangement financially, or is she giving you flack to get your hair cut and get back to doing "a proper job"! [:D]

Jeez..times must be grim when even the legendary ToddK has to do a day job!![:D][:D]

cheers,

Ron

John O. -> RE: Foot tapping different palos (Nov. 15 2009 8:16:59)

Since July and doing great, thanks!

Dance classes, shows accompanyment or solo, giving lessons. Not strictly flamenco either. I'm only making a few hundred less than in the office, which for an artist really isn't bad. At least I make more than a hair stylist [:D] This part of Germany isn't doing as bad as other parts with Frankfurt nearby, things are happening here, no complaints.

My wife kept pushing me to do it and is glad I did it. She's an artist too (theatrical make-up), but it helps that her income from the theater is steady.

I still don't see myself as anywhere near accomplished as a flamenco guitarist, which is why I'm looking forward to a couple trips to Spain a year with my savings - probably with the help of a side job at some point.

Who knows if I'll be doing it until I retire, but at least now I have the feeling like I'm doing something with my life instead of ... just waiting to die, I guess [:D]

Lota foot tapping going on here! But what do they know!

you got the tomatito or moraito encuentro? they both do it on there, and they also do every other beat, which when i've seen paco do live as well, he switches between the 1,2, 4,5 and the 12, 2, 4

but as Ron says, i'm sure

They don't DEPEND on it.

there's a big difference between the way we use our brains for abstract reasoning and problem solving, and the way we use our brains to send messages to muscles to create movement....

Sometimes it is even necessary to trust in your foot, for example when you don't hear yourself.
