I am using acryl powder since 6 months or so. Im doing 2 or 3 layers of glue (cyano acrylate) and powder, but the go off after 4 days or so, because the glue gets off little by little (not because of playing, but because of washing). I cant be the only one who has this problem? Do you guys have found any solution?

I have made a great discovery for my nails

GORILLA GLUE

start with clean properly shaped nails
put on a coat of nail hardener
then put on a very thin coat of Gorrilla Glue

the nail hardener is so the glue is not really sticking to your nail...... but to the nail hardener. When you want to start over it will remove easier.


this glue can take a beating
Im getting two or three weeks without reapplying .......just file as usual
The only down fall is the glue takes over an hour to dry

Hey Deniz

I'd strongly recommend You to stay away from using glue that contains cyano acrylate!!! that's just making it worse!! It's poisonous and ruins your nails on the long period[:(]

Altough I had just a couple of period when I struggled with nail problems, I know how frustrating this is!

Well, Juan Carmona said on one of his courses to eat a lot of cheese (ementaler), wich worked for me very well!!! ...AND I like cheese a lot [:D][:D][:D] almost all kinds of cheese: parmesan, eidamer etc. Maybe I was Mickey Mouse in my previous life [;)]
I really think that the things You eat determinate the quality of Your nails, hair etc. etc so choosing your foods properly will strenghten Your nails from 'inside'

Aside from that I've tried several stuff, but had quite good results with only two things: one is a nail-growth booster and the other one is a lacquer applied in a very thin coat...

As soon as I got home, gonna write here the exact name of those..I don't remember well, which shows the frequency of my nail problems [:)]

am i just lucky? i stopped using any kind of glue completely bit less than a year ago and haven't had a nail problem ever since...they're both flexible and strong which sounds somewhat ambivalent but that's the case...as i'm not conscious about the kind of food i eat i can only put it down to my liking of milk products too, every morning i drink coffee with 50% milk in it plus i love cheese...

Hm is there a better glue than acrylate?
I like cheese too, eat it everyday, and i actually had never any severe problem with my nails. I just decided to use nail hardener because they got thinner and thinner. But when i started with dance, the nail hardener would always fall off during playing.
I am very happy with acrylic powder, it prefer the sound i get with a thicker nail. The only problem is, it falls off because the glue looses adhesivity.
Gorilla Glue... sounds good [:D]
Gonna try it, and also try putting a nail hardener first.

Im with xirdneH on this. All natural is the way i go now.

I used Acrylic for a long time. It worked, and i thought it sounded good.
But then i decided to get rid of it, and go natural. Once my nails recovered
from the acrylic, which took a good 6 months, i thought, WOW, natural nails
sound ALOT better. I think the reason is, they are flexible. The acrylic is
like cement.
I say, go natural, and use crazy glue for dance class.

You natural nails respond to hard use. They eventually strengthen themselves
the more you use them unprotected. Similar to the way your skin calluses when you wear on it. The biggest issue with unprotected nails
is hazards like door knobs, case buckles, etc, when not playing guitar.

Has anyone tried biotin? I have some but haven't used it yet. Seems like a good way to go if you want to use natural nails with no hardners/glues.

Well, if you are interested in using glue, and really want a rock-hard protection that will not wear off, it's really simple actually: baking soda.

Just put some on the nail and slap your krazy glue on top of that and sand it down a bit.

You don't need a lot of soda (just a thin dusting) and in fact if you use too much it can actually smoke and burn you when you put the glue on because the reaction is so strong [:-]

i have biotin in my multivitamin. i seriously cant remember the last time i broke a nail. even if i did, my nails grow really fast.

but i also use opi nail hardener. so i dont really know what's making my nails so strong.

Biotin is found in most B-complex vitamins.

No its not luck.

I stopped using glue too and my nails are stronger than ever. I'm an amatuer luthier so I sometimes break a nail, but when this happens I just file it down and make do for a couple of days. It doesn't take long to get used to a very short nail and they soon grow back.
But, if i was a performer I would resort to glue and tissue in an emergency.

Going the natural way is the best, but during the recovery of glues i used 'oriflame' Growth booster, and for hardening I used to use some Avon Nail experts in a very thin layer, and when a piece of it comes down just replace it immediatelly. that worked for me and i don't remember when I broke a nail last time, not using anything, maybe that two on a 3 or 4 monthly basis.

Those of you who switch from acryl to natural have to tell me how you managed the sound, coz my acryl layers are 2 times thicker than my nails. So the whole thing is 3 times as big as my normal nail. That gives a round and powerfull sound imo. I only use it only on i,m,a btw. I tried to play without anything just 2 days ago it sounded really awfull [>:]

ever since i took Biotin B I have not cracked a nail , and they seem to grow back faster, too.

Once you use the acrylic powder, your nails are screwed for at least 6 months.

They will need to grow all the way out from the cuticle,,, twice. 3 months per cycle= 6 months.

Then they will be back to normal. At that point it will take another few months
to build them up by playing on them alot. They will get thicker and thicker as
you play on them, and file them everyday.

No shortcut on this one sorry to say. You'll have to show extreme patience to get where you want to go on this, but you can do it.
Its definately worth it in my opinion. Im actually still waiting for my index to get through the second growth cycle. i was impatient in the begining and put a silk wrap on it. Bad idea.

Also wanted to add, i dont believe in the philosophy that nails are connected
to diet.

I have the worst diet imaginable. I live on rootbeer and pizza. I never take any supplements or multivitamins of any kind. My nails are extremely thick and healthy.

If i were to grow out the nails on my left hand, they would be much thinner than
my right hand. They have to be played on, and filed for quite some time. That is the key. Not what you eat.

The gorilla glue sounds interesting. What type of gorilla glue are we talking about ....because I notice there are 4 types...original/ woodworking/ epoxy and superglue..all different compositions.

I switched from super glue to this Diamond Strength nail hardener and have found it really hard. There was almost no sign of wear after 2+ weeks (two hours every day). It’s easy to apply. Three coats and the nails would look visibly thicker. $6.99 at Ulta.
Here is a picture.

Thanks for the tip. I saw that stuff in the store and thought about trying it.

I have tried about 10 different cyanoacrelate brands not just for my nails but also in guitar building and woodworking. I think most of them are garbage. Two brands have stood out, 1 sold by a Violin Luthier supply place at $18 a bottle. Never goes bad and dries clear. But the best is this stuff : DAP rapid fuse. I LOVE this glue and it’s Made in my home town! I use it to slap together quick jigs for guitar building. It is incredibly strong. Doesn’t go bad, And it sticks to my nails for a long time without chipping off. Says it’s the latest in cyanoacrelate technology... whatever it is, it works well. Also comes in a brush on bottle.

Only been playing since last year but I am using a nail hardener followed by a vitamin-enriched base coat and clear top coat (all supermarket brands by Mercadona in Spain). When the top coat starts to peel off (week or two), I remove the lot, feed with a vitamin oil, and then start again. Working for me so far and my nails seem to be getting stronger. Of course, avoiding any kind of DIY has also helped!

Thanks for the tip. I’ve been using brush-on Krazy Glue, and it’s much better than the squeezy stuff and doesn’t dry out as that does; but it won’t hold my nails for long when they tear.

I’ll give this a go.

Here is the ingredient list as posted on the Walmart website.
Ingredients: Butyl Acetate, Ethyl Acetate, Alcohol Denat., Nitrocellulose, Isopropyl Alcohol, Adipic Acid/Neopentyl Glycol/Trimellitic Anhydride Copolymer, Triphenyl Phosphate, Trimethyl Pentanyl Diisobutyrate, Sucrose Acetate Isobutyrate, Etocrylene, Dimethicone, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, Diamond Powder, D&C Violet No. 2 (CI 60725).

Not sure if this is what you are looking for.

I'm highly allergic to formaldehyde and I have to be really careful with anything containing nitrocellulose, which is included in the list of ingredients.
