I'm soon going to make my first peghead and I'm puzzling about the peg position/spacing.

With machine tuners everything is now pretty much standardised.
Is there a standard peg spacing?
Are the pegs always in line?

Can anyone suggest a plan or book or drawing with a 'standard' peghead?

Hi Kevin,

'Making master guitars' by Roy courtnall includes a Torres peghead design, there is also a peghead included in the G.A.L. plan for the Barbero guitar.

Yes Courtnall's book is useful as always. I will have to make my own design I think.

The problem I'm pondering is how to wind the strings to provide clearance round all the pegs.There seeems to be 2 ways to do it

1 Offset some pegs, by not having them in line or
2 Winding the two E strings opposite to the other strings

Since I've never used a peghead myself I'm not sure which is best. I would guess that having all the pegs winding the same way would be better from the players point of view?

Could any users of pegheads help me with this?

My Anders peghead has the 2 e's wound in the opposite direction to the other strings. I got used to this almost immediately, it's very intuitive.

Hehe im just about to make two negra pegheads side by side. i havent made a peg head in my workshop before so im busy kitting myself up for that.

the ones i have helped with during my apprenticeship where also wound with the two e's opposite to the others i think this is the most traditional way.

Are you going to make your pegs your self or buy them in? I have opted to buy them as its easier than getting a lathe. The is a guy called Bruce Brooke who makes lutes he also makes pegs and will be happy to do any design you like!

Make a full-size drawing with accurate string spacing at the nut and exact positioning of the pegs, including the diameter of the peg where it comes through on the top. Then draw the strings and check if they will touch adjacent pegs as they pass. Keep in mind that the winding around the peg takes up space. I move the 5th and 2nd pegs just enough to avoid the problem but not enough to make them seem out of line.

Most pegheads have their pegs in line.

2 advices. Use a sharp pegshaver and shave it down to around 6,2 - 6,5 at the tip. It helps tuning a lot.

Yes I'm going to buy in some pegs and then play around with pegshaver and reamers. (years ago i made a violin so I still have these) and scrapwood till i get the dimensions right.

I will keep the pegs inline unless it is necessary to move the 2nd and 5th a touch.
I am in no hurry for this. I have two guitars to make before this one and I only make 3 or 4 per year so I have 6 months to get the neck right before I build it (it will be a blanca)
