Olé, Ricardo! I was going to say 'rythm' or compas, too bad its not listed...
You just have to look closely...
Cante is based on... ? Rythm. Toque is based on ... ? Rythm. Baile? Rythm. Palmas, Cajon, Jaleo,... ? Rythm. Rythm, Rythm, Rythm. Of course the libre palos are also flamenco, but they dont "define" flamenco for me.

IMO Canté is far more essential. Rythm on itself can't project emotions in the same way canté can.

That is a question of what attracts you more in flamenco. Singing is in every music form an essential part, but it doesnt "define" the music form for me. (Music is more abstract, i think). Compas is what makes cante/toque/baile flamenco, and what divides them from all other music styles IMO. Each one can stand on their own, if there is compas. You could even have a rock riff, make it fit nicely in compas, and call it buleria.

flamenco "forms"

if it's not solea, siguiriyas, bulerias, tangos, tientos, etc. then, to me, it's not flamenco....

i agree. this is usually how i judge it. some songs/people blur the lines though...

Arash -> RE: what defines flamenco for U? (Jun. 1 2009 12:53:12)

Well, i don't want to jump on the (Cante,etc.) bandwagon and am honest and vote for.....

Guitar [:)]

But i respect and like Cante, Baile and all other related things very much.

But without Guitar, i would leave the world of flamenco.
