Miguel de Maria -> tomatito's interview (Jul. 14 2004 18:22:42)

There is a Tomatito interview on Flamenco-World. I enjoyed it very much, not having had much exposure to Tomatito's personality, he seems down-to-earth, sensible, and wise. The priceless quote was that when he met Paco at 15 (?), he "surrendered," realizing Paco could not be surpassed. At that moment he realized he had to do his own thing, that trying to imitate or better Paco was impossible. He also opined that many younger guitarists are subconsciously trying to beat Paco, and that it was only a way to ruin and desolation! I guess he's right, even I am always eyeing Paco's incredible runs and hoping to achieve them (and that's just one aspect of course of Paco's genius). The resulting "submission" is Tomatito, a colorful, vibrant guitarist who is playful and has created an inimitable style of his own. I think we could learn a lot not only from Tomatito's falsetas, but from his attitude.
