Güiro -> Looking for exercises to help you keep a steady compas. (May 20 2009 12:45:52)

I have been having trouble keeping a slow compas while accompanying dancers especially when they want a slow bulerias. The speed always creeps up until they can't keep up with me. I can hold the compas at home since I practice with solo compas but at the studio we don't have a percussionist. Anyone have any exercises that will help me to keep a steady compas ?

try playing solea por bulerias....

or just play bulerias but keep putting in little fills from solea por bulerias (say, on beats 7, 8, 9,) that have enough notes in that you can't afford to speed up too much.

do you tap your foot? if so, you probably don't tap each of 12 beats in bulerias, right? so tap every beat, that should help you keep your speed steady and constant at a slower tempo.

Metronome, no doubt! The slower the better.

With a metronome you can practise being on the beat and even getting just a tad bit behind or in front of the beat. This can help even out the speeding up and help you get a better feeling for when you speed up or slow down.

I've accompanied for dancers who can dance at a constant speed and still give you a the feeling they want to slow down without really slowing down - very tough to do.
