Hi Minordjango, I like your optimism - I don't think England is a very cheap place to live! But are you going to be in Leeds or Manchester? They are really not that close!

If you are going to be in Leeds there is certainly an active Pena over that side of the country. There is some flamenco in other parts of England too but it's patchy. My guess is that most of it is in London. When you know where you are going to be based post again and we may be able to give you some links.

thankyou alisa for the reply, sorry (Geography out the window [&:] ill head to leeds i need to try and fine some part time work, or a fulltime job , any one have any idea say a base salary to survive , yes i realise its really expensive im concerned for that.
probably go there with just 4000 Euro, so i havent much time to secure a good job, yet ive been in asia a few years not a great deal of flamenco , so im starving for a music outlet, and here leeds will be pretty cool .

cheers [:)]

Hi minordjango,

Any particular reason for Leeds?
Or even the UK?

I thought you had a teaching job already lined up.

If you are just coming "on spec", then I reckon you'd probably have as much chance finding work in Spain as in the UK, providing your Spanish is reasonable.

cheers,

Ron

minordjango -> RE: EnglAND on a shoestring!!!!! (Apr. 24 2009 8:41:38)

Hi Ron,

i have a few jobs lined up yet, im in the process of making a few important discissions, spain id love to be there for a while , yet the money isnt so great and ib be in Madrid, where id prefer to be roaming down south .

and this time in my life id make a better salary in Leeds, need some cash, maybe i can hope to get about 1000 euro a month in Spain, not a great deal, i can earn a lot more in England , and also the inclusion of a woman friend being there [:)],
i will at least be in spain for 3 months if its cool ill stay on, id love a job in the south teaching English and earning around 1000 yet id be lucky, my spanish not so great , my flamenco playing Worse!!!! but im getting there , ill have to get a few uploads happening, ive just realised i can record on PC, im hopeless!!!!!!!!![:o] cheers

Ron.M -> RE: EnglAND on a shoestring!!!!! (Apr. 24 2009 9:06:29)

Hi minordjango,

Well there's heaps of Flamenco in Madrid. (more than Leeds!)

BTW, I must admit I've never been anywhere east of Greece, but when I think of Tibet, the first thing that springs to mind isn't a guy playing Flamenco guitar and recording it on a computer. [:-] [:D][:D]

cheers,

Ron

Quite so. But they do have plucked strings (dranyen), and they have style; even our Florian would have a long way to go to be as cool as the guy at 3:55

(not to mention the amazing scenery)

Ron.M -> RE: EnglAND on a shoestring!!!!! (Apr. 24 2009 10:57:50)

Hey Estevan,

By the time minordjango gets here probably most of Leeds will be existing on a shoestring.

The guy at 3:55 is cool and I bet a lot of foreign guitar players (like Peter Walker) reckon they could probably get it down in a couple of days or so and recreate it in concerts and folk clubs throughout the World and get a rapturous applause as a presenter and virtuoso of authentic Tibetan music.

But if he played it to those folk in Tibet, they wouldn't understand a thing he was playing. [:-]

(Probably think it was some kind of strange American folk music.[:D][:D])

cheers,

Ron

PS: Good vid here!

Sadly true. But in the sense that minordjango meant it, from a foreigner's point of view, it struck me as quite a joke as England has always been a very expensive country to visit.

...or like that other guy with the "instructional" videos who tells you that there are no rules in flamenco, you can just do whatever you want!

Thanks for the tuning video, Ron. The first guy's response is classic folklore: "You don't have to tune it - - - you just turn the pegs until it sounds right"!

While we're at it, I like the 'ambling yak' feeling of this accompaniment; the guy has a nice voice too:

...then when your pony starts trotting, the music picks up:

I like both of the numbers.
Although I don't understand the finer points of the music, you can just hear that the guy is good and playing what he WANTS to play and is in control of the instrument.

I also love the way the two "fans" appear at 3:44 and help themselves to his lunch! [:D]

cheers,

Ron

i love this forum really do, unreal.

yeah Ron What can one say the music is amazing in well any culture, China has an incredible vast array of tradional instruments, (Tibet is china ?? ) mm well not going to go there,

Anyhow The most beautiful feeling is just hearing a local singing in the hills, its pure and i really dont knopw how to say !!! Duende would be the way,

id been in Asia a fair amount of time now 4 years, and just want to get back and play some music, Flamenco music isnt like it is in say Japan or the states or even leeds,
converting My monthly wage (Approx 500 USD) doesnt convert well for a long stay in Spain .....but ill give it a good go.

a really cool instrument is the 2 string instrument in China names Er hu , often played by blind men , go check it.

maybe i can become a bank robber, and survive , im not that excited about using my teaching degree, and teaching in Public schools again

Nah,

That was an option back in the good old days when Banks actually kept money in their vaults.

These days all you'll come away with is a bunch of IOU's and bits of paper called "complex financial instruments" which wouldn't even buy you a loaf of bread in Zimbabwe....

cheers,

Ron
