 Do you mean that within one compas the step is divided into two sixes or four threes?  If yes I would say, with my dancer's hat on (or dancer's shoes?!) that it doesn't much matter.  Sometimes it's more interesting if I do a step in threes that contrasts with the usual compas.  That's just part of the funkyness of bulerias.  However occasionally I might ask a guitarist to play in a particular way to mirror what I'm doing.  So the answer is..... it depends!  Hahaha that's not very helpful is it!
 
 I'm sure if the teacher were unhappy she/he would let you know.  We dancers are not known for holding back with guitarists [:D]
