i have a horrible microphone too. the thing that really helps my recording is eliminating background noise. i have adobe audition which i think has the same basic layout as cool edit. once you record something, select the file then go to edit view. there's three tabs, edit view, multitrack view, cd project view. select a part of the file where you re not playing, there is just noise. click on noise reduction on the left, then capture noise reduction. then click on noise reduction. make sure you select entire file. play around with the settings, then click ok. your recording should sound a lot better now!
