as far as i know, you NEED itunes to put songs onto the ipod.
it's the only software you need.

you can download it here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/

once you have itunes set up and running on your computer, it's time to add music from your computer (your mp3's) to your itunes. you can add them by simply dragging the music into the itunes icon or window. or from the itunes window, click on file, then to add folder/file to library.

anything that is in your itunes will now be transferred to your ipod when you plug it in. if you take something out of your itunes, it will take out of your ipod. and vice versa. that is why you can only use one computer to keep your ipod organized. your ipod is now 'synced' with your computer.

that's the basics of it. other features can be a little confusing even to more advanced users.

hope that helps! you must be excited to use your new ipod. i know i was!

No, you do not need iTunes to use an iPod. Well, not necessarily. You do need some kind of software interface for an iPod, but there are other choices. Here's a few alternatives

iTunes just blows. I hate that piece of &^*% software - it is a major resource hog. Otherwise I like the Ipod. There are ways around the Apple BS limitations re one computer etc. I believe Apple is moving away from the straighjacket of DRM so the future hopefully is getting better...opinionated ain't I...

Oh yes, iTunes sucks up a lot of processing power. My computer ran slow every time I started up iTunes. I would recommend Songbird as the best iTunes alternative.
