a_arnold -> question on figured back/sides wood (Mar. 30 2009 14:29:31)

Thanks to Anders and kovachian, I can now ask for madera figurada, but unfortunately the luthier has sent photos of the raw back/sides, and naturally the figure doesn't show well.
In my own work, I have learned that wetting the wood with mineral spirits will
reveal the figure and show it as it will appear after the finish is applied.

So now I need to know the the spanish for mineral spirits. The online translator, when I put in "mineral spirits" and translate to spanish, then translate the results back into english, comes back as ghosts drinking mineral water.

Can anyone help with the spanish for mineral spirits?

Tony Arnold

I´m not a native english speaker but I think that what you are looking for is "Aguarras simil"

But I would ask the builder to wet the wood with alcohol

Thanks, Anders! I guess alcohol would be just as good -- maybe better since it would leave even less residue. I only used mineral spirits because I was working as a cabinetmaker, using varnish rather than shellac.

Thanks! I'm off and running. . .
