Sorry, no idea.

Did you look in the headstock gallery?

Ricardo -> RE: Can anyone identify this Flamenco guitar? (Mar. 30 2009 10:01:25)

Not sure of the guitar, but the way the guy is strumming alegrias is not exemplary.

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Can anyone identify this Flamenco guitar? (Mar. 30 2009 12:23:54)

Damn it's really more of a Guajira if anything. It's amazing how many people there are out there with instructional videos that can't get the first thing right.
Oh the guitar...no idea but sounds pretty decent.

what's wrong with it? i watched this video when i first started. hope i didn't pick up any bad habits. [&:]

and that rosette is kind of cool.

edit: nevermind. i actually took the time to listen to it. yeah, i agree with everyone else. wtf. even as a beginner, i remember having this thought that maybe he's a classical guitarist who learned a few flamenco things here and there.

Yes but we dont know if its really him who uploaded the video, or just a guy sharing a video. It could be also just a typing mistake. Regarding instructionals, i would use Encuentro, thats the most authentic thing you can get.

Munin -> RE: Can anyone identify this Flamenco guitar? (Mar. 30 2009 13:31:53)

Except none of the Encuentro videos are really geared towards total beginners. And while the Oscar Herrero videos are more usable in that regard, as far as I know they have no English subtitles. I think it's safe to say that what the market really lacks at the moment is a beginner DVD from an "authentic" source that is easily understandable by foreigners as well. But then I haven't really been keeping up with recent releases so I might be wrong.

Having said that, I watched the whole Gilmartin DVD and it's mediocre at best. It's of course not Sedlak-level stuff, and the guy knows at least what flamenco should be and teaches more or less appropriate things, but his playing is kind of bad and he does teach some details I personally would not advocate.

I'm new to the foro here, do we like bashing people or no?

Just kidding... you could be right about that. There is so much misinformation out there that you really just have to learn for yourself what is right, and avoid all the rest...

What about Graf-Martinez? I find it pretty basic in the beginning and the instructor plays very well.

No, his Paso a Paso I through III videos don't have subtitles, but there is a voice-over in English which translates what he says in the vids. I've been watching PaP II lately and the quality of instruction and the drills he shares seem like a great idea to me and really helped clarify things for me.

All the instructional videos I'm familiar with expect the student to have some skill at classical guitar.

Sorry but i have no sympathy for teachers who claim to know flamenco but teach completely wrong like this guy or Sedlak...sell DVDs to beginners just to make money.

This is waist of money, waist of time, waist of everything,..,,,,,and in one year if you are still in to flamenco and want to learn it more seriously, you realize that nearly everything you learned was wrong and that you have no idea about the compas of any Palo. So you have to spend another year to get rid of all the wrong things you have learned and start again.

So, no need to discuss about these videos. They are crap. This "Alegrias"?!? was also crap. Period.

This guy is better than Sedlak, but still far away from a Level to TEACH!

Unless you just want to play some spanish sounding stuff and dont really care about the fundamental rules.

---

So

For Beginners: Gerhard Graf Martinez DVD (and CD + Book) . Is also in English.
You learn correct technique, correct execution of Palos and compas.

OR

Online Lessons (like from Jason McGuire ) with a GOOD beginner section with Technique,Palos etc.
Flamenco-lessons.com

I think "Adam del Monte" has also online lessons and he is good teacher too.

Or lessons from flamenco-teacher.com

etc.

For Intermediate, you can then switch to Encuentro Series.

I wasnt bashing anything. I respect all people who are trying to give something to other people, nevermind which level of teaching or playing they have, because everybody, at some point, can be your "teacher" (that includes what you learn is correct and useful). But no guitarrist on earth would ever deny that Nunez or Tomatito are among the most authentic guitarrists.
