I would like to hear your instrumental buleria favourites. There are many brilliant and so the favourites tend to change for time to time. But I would like to know what is your number one at the moment. It will be interresting then try to find them and listen and propably expand my buleria horizons.
My favourite is Pacos almoraima from the same named album. Its so strong, dynamic, emotional and grooving. I really like it, it ignites me [:D]

there are many that i like, but the first i thought of when reading your question was Pinonate...
any bulería by Paco is great, and also i'm very fond of Gerardo Núnez's non-standard bulería compositions...
i also love Ojos de la Alhambra by Vicente Amigo...

srshea -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 10:14:33)

This here's pretty hard to beat:

Lately I've really been enjoying the first bulerias from Paco Cepero's "Corazon y Bordon. It's really slow and laid back (about 160 bpm?), and has this relaxed, confident feel that I really like, and a lot of cool, melodic falsetas. I definitely wouldn't rate this as a "best" of all time sort of thing (it's a little too atypical for that), but it's been one of my favorites of late....

Munin -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 13:17:28)

Jason's "Pavan". Sure, there's lots of great recorded bulerias out there, but nothing grabs me quite as strongly as that one.

Agreed, Almoraima is one of a kind, one of my most frequent choices out of the many things Paco de Lucia recorded i love to listen to. On youtube, there are a few Bulerias i saved on my "favorites" and like to return to; you probbaly know them, but just in case....

Oscar Herrero "De Colores" Bulerias (Flamenco Guitar)

Oscar Herrero Taranta Bulerias

(a classic) Tomatito Bulerias

Moraito por Bulerias

and yes....
Ojos de Alhambra (Bulerías), Vicente Amigo

Bogdan1980 -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 13:36:53)

Well Cepero's bulerias are great. They are all very deceptively simple and rhythmic.

But then there is Rio De La Miel. First time I heard that it blew me away.

I've got this as my ring tone on my phone. Great when it goes off in the middle of a meeting[:D]

Here is a strange one just up on YouTube, very odd from an old maestro:

cneberg -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 15:32:02)

I remember hearing Vicente's "Gitano De Lucia" for the first time.... Man, that arpeggio is so nice.

"Cepa Andaluza" also.

Arash -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 15:50:52)

Well, my favourite bulerias would be a combination of my favourite falsetas from different pieces and/or Artists.
If i would say a name of a complete piece, that would not be exactly true because there is somewhere another falseta
which is nicer than a falseta in that piece.
Thats the beauty of flamenco (falsetas). You can "copy and paste" your favourite falsetas in to a complete piece.
You cant do that in any other music as far as i know.

But however, generally Paco![:D]

Jim Opfer -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 15:54:42)

How about this one:

I have Morricone's "fist full of dollars" as my ring tone... it has that duel at tequila sunrise sort of daring sound. Also great to have go off at meetings with opposing counsel[:D]

Sabicas is a classic no matter what he does. Thank you for pointing that out, Jim.

Starvetti -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 18:31:21)

I'm new to flamenco, but found that I really am drawn to "old school", and so this is one of my current favorites:

BTW I've been lurking for several months and this is my first post. I must say that this is a great forum and in that time I've learned a quite a lot! Thanks every one.

kozz -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 24 2009 21:37:37)

I like this Buleria, it's sounds new to me....

it starts at 2:10

thanks Huib!

Tercio de Vara-sanlucar
Jucal-nunez
Mandaito -amigo
Niño Miguel-tomatito

aleksi -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 25 2009 11:40:14)

great to see all these answers. I havent yet listened all of them but I will.

bursche -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 25 2009 12:08:29)

The first I thought of was "El Pañuelo" by Paco.

I admire Gerardo for his "El Gallo Azul" as well.
Another favourite is "Barrio Santiago" by Tomatito.

You asked for an instrumental, but What I listen most often to recently is the Fiesta por Bulerías recording from a festival in 1991.
It lasts half an hour and features Moraito as the first guitarist.
The playing is not as complex as in the usual solo recordings of course, but it's great acompainment and excellent cante.

aleksi -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 26 2009 9:12:34)

I listened these bulerias. Very nice ones. I learned to recognise different styles. I must say the most I liked diego del gastors one. He has everything what it takes. All of the players have their unique and recognizeable style which is cool. Paco ceperos pulgar tricks are also cool and attention capturing. Tomatito is one that I have just started to appressiate. I've allways acknowledged his abilities as a guitarist but not before recently I have really started to like him. His tangos and bulerias especially. So many good ones...
Im wondering that are these different styles of for example diego del gastor, sabicas, gerardo nunez etc. from a specific schools of style or are they just how the individual projects buleria. Maybe they are littlebit both but is there any recognizeable "eastcoast/westcoast" type of schools.

Wannabee -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 30 2009 16:06:42)

How about this one?

or this?

or this?

There are so many great ones, how can anyone say one is "best"?

..and just for a bit of fun....

instrumental buleria favourites

Thats a tough question because you are talking about specific compositions.
If I think of favorate all time Buleria (in the traditional sense) it would be the 2cd track from Flamenco Vivo with Cameron and Tomatito in Paris.

In the traditional I love Paco Ceperos "Suenos en Jerez" Its just an amazing collection of punchy Jerez falsetas.
P.s. there is nothing simple about the way Cepero Plays!!

El Pañuelo from Sirroco is my favourate Paco Buleria. It still sends a shiver in me.

All time favorate in terms of composition and originality is Gerardo Nuñezs Trafalgar though.

Morao -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 31 2009 2:47:08)

one of my favorite bulerias is "gitano de lucia" from vicente amigo and "cepa andaluza" form paco.

for very smart playing check nico josele:

Florian -> RE: the best buleria (Mar. 31 2009 3:44:04)

I like many but i have always liked Juan Carlos Romero's El Mostrador

minordjango -> RE: the best buleria (Apr. 13 2009 2:47:10)

Soniquete by Paco de lucia from the album Zyrab.

anyone here Todd k's version of this a few months ago ?? amazing >>

really amazing , its an incredible almost seems atonal in areas pieces.

i really like the old bulerias that Sabicas plays, hes and nino ricardos are cool especially when they going into a tradional ending the a minor to 57 thing , i love it.

tomatito goess off on the bulerias , im amazed to hear he uses many of the same falsetas he did with cameron, goes to show rhythm impetus is so important

minordjango -> RE: the best buleria (Apr. 13 2009 6:11:37)

aminor to E7 ideas i mean sorry guys and gals.

is it called la catalina or similar, its a popular cycle from PDl, to other sabicas etc, i love it, very gypsy sounding

Refreshing isn't it? To bad more players don't do the same.
