russelldinho -> Tremolo (Mar. 20 2009 11:45:40)

I've been rattling along fairly well with the graf-martinez method, but the section on tremolo technique has got me well and truly confused. I always thought the aim was to get the tremolo as smooth and even as possible but listening to the CD, the piece (Quejío III) seems very stuttery... there're a whole bunch of appoggiaturas in the tab but there doesnt seem to be any match with what i'm reading and what i'm hearing...
any pointers on this or examples of a "straight" tremolo vs tremolo with appoggiatura?

cheers in advance

Graf Martinez's method isn't ought to show virtuosity.

Anyway he plays the tremolo sections very slowly to give an example of how the notes are played and it is quite a good way to practice your clarity of tone.

But there is no doubt that the aim is a smooth, even tone that makes you able to play a flowing melody.
Nevertheless there are variations:
While concert guitarists like Paco, Manolo and all their "followers" play a very even and melodic tremolo, you can also hear a more accented tremolo (for example Moraito) between those who aim towards a more traditional tone.

To my ears many PdL tremolo parts are not very even. Deliberately so of course - the reason being to add interest and avoid monotony. Every time I hear Sabicas doing a tremolo I mentally tune out halfway through for some reason.
