Doitsujin -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 7:35:23)

And here some stats!! [;)] I hope there aren´t any mistakes. I used the excell sheet I prepared for the intermadiate challenge.

As Michelob already wrote, batman is on the first place (A).

But when looking closer. The average of points which everybody got is within the "best 5 players" not significant different! So in the opinion of nerds... we only have a first place which is shared by 5 players!! (B)
Batman,Superman,Nick Fury,Gambit and Human Torch.
Dead Pool and The Thing share the 2nd place. :.))
So it can be assumed, that there aren´t big differences at the beginner level. Maybe they get more significant with a higher playing skill. Or let´s say more obvious for the judges.

The generosity of possible given points by the judges was more or less the same. Only RonM and Florian were significantly more generous than me... oh.. hehe.. (C)

In (D) you see how often a judge voted above or below the average. )comparison to all votes given from each judge) And we see... Pimientito and Florian are the nicest judges.. They voted always above the average. (Again you pussy Florian.. hehehehe :.))) (joking! ok? Don´t take it seriously. The differences were extremely small.... ;.)

I skipped the details of (E) see intermediate challenge. It only showed that the judges were in more or less one opinion about the first 2 places and the last 2 places. And for gambit and Nick Fury who are in the middle field.

Nice challenge everybody!

Michelob I am sorry lol, i was having enough trouble keeping it a secret before this

but i did it now [8|] so sue me ...actualy forghet that lol its probably not a good idea to make jokes like that to a lawyer [&:][:D]

Patrick -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 7:56:35)

I don't know if it's a cultural issue, but more geographical. In the US to say you did something "shoddily", is an extreme slap in the face and gj had every right to be upset. When I read Ron’s post it about knocked me over.

But all is cool now.

edguerin -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 8:09:19)

Michelob
great you reconsidered quitting.
It would've been such a loss!

Florian -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 8:13:11)

so anyway despite of the litlle hicup, i am very pleased and proud what went on and what is going to continue to go on

all someone has to do is press "latest posts" to see that the forum has allready changed for the better ( not that it was bad before) but it just got even better, and its absoluteley kicking with life, and its fresh, and driven ..and many new faces and contribuitors

members that were once intimidated and shy to share audios with us are now talking about doing their own challenges

they feel comfortable in uploading and sharing and they are going to...that makes me proud..and excited of whats to come

i have been inspired and reminded and given a lesson in humbleness by beginners just from watching how thet interacted with eachother and the way they carried eachother across the finishing line, encouraged, helped eachother and the humble speach by alex its all nothing but good stuff..

absoluteley inspired, proud and full of admiration

thank you

Edit.. Ron its cool, i am sorry about the long post..this edit button is terrible..i am one of this guys in real life that has a disagreement or an argument then walks away thinking about things i should have said better...:" Oh !! i should have said "This" and That" [:'(]

and than this place with an edit button actualy makes that crazy idea possible !! and way to eazy...and the next thing i know its a full page again and i have said too much as usual [&o]

Ailsa -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 8:38:34)

You are right to be proud Flo. It was a great idea and I think brought out the best in the Foro members.

THATS IT [:@] I am leaving [:D]

lol and you havent even been here all that long, i think i left about 7 times before you got here...and i made about 7 I am leaving posts lol

because i dont belive in quiet dignity [8|]...theres no point on making a point of leaving if noone knows...if there was a door i could slam i would have just done that and be done with it [:D]..but no door

i do a good storm out and a greate phone hangup [:)] i got the hung up technique from my mom, 2 out of 5 converstaions over the phone end with her hanging up on me...its a thing of beauty ..i wish you could experience it in real life one day

Oops!
Guess I dropped a clanger then! Thanks Pat and apologies gj!

The term "shoddy" in Scotland anyway is not a grossly strong term when used colloqually. It just means "something short of a proper job".

I remember once you telling me off for wearing a jumper, which apparently means something other than a pullover in the States, adding that whatever I wished to do in the privacy of my own home was up to myself. [:D]

(Apparently it's an all-in-one wool suit worn by toddlers.)

Actually you guys in the US may be surprised to know that calling somebody "buddy" almost anywhere in the UK will be seen as offensive.... and likely to get you a bunch of fives in the face if said to the wrong person! [:D]

"dude" is not quite so bad, but I wouldn't chance it.

So be forewarned!

So again, apologies for any offence taken.

cheers,

Ron

Arash -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 9:42:54)

what happens if i say something like "dude, you did everything so shoddily, buddy" to someone here?

hmm, i am happy that my native language is not english....maybe someone was really offensive to me in the past here and i didnt even get it [:D]

gj Michelob -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 10:04:46)

I didn’t quit so to get a reaction (but because 'simply and ol’ fashioned upset), but man did I enjoy the balance of this thread. This forum keeps on showing great camaraderie and wonderful humane and caring spirit.

Now I too, as competition secretary, will offer my own closing statement to the entertaining Beginners’ competition.

“Beginners” was undoubtedly a misnomer. These challengers have shown some skills I would hardly categorize at the beginning stage; and if that were the beginning class, we have raised the bar to a fine level.
More importantly many of us have learned a thing or two about flamenco, through this. All of these “superheroes” have served as teachers in this “masters’ class” we called competition. I enjoyed playing along, and I am not sure I could have done any betterthan, if not even as well as you guys did. Batman deserves our praises (Bravo Bravo Bravissimo!!!) for he’s shown us a stimulating rendition of the Falseta at hand. However, each submission helped me understand the piece more accurately in a multidimensional sort of way.

Now that the “cat is out of the bag" -and cats seem to have a tendency to find their way out of the bag, don’t they? [Ftnote]- Winners –intermediate and beginners- please contact Tom Nunez at info@LaFalseta.com; as soon as Batman chooses his cejilla, I will know the final bill and settle petty matters with the wonderful Tom so that prizes may ship timely.

Footnote:
When I asked our “unreliable” friend Florian [lol with the greatest affection you can imagine and exponentially multiplied] to keep me anonymous on the prizes, I explained that I adhered to the wise words “when giving, your left hand shouldn’t know what your right hand does”. Ironically, the same gentleman who said that, also said “there shall be no word spoken in the dark that shan’t come out in the light” [more or less, ‘haven’t been to church in a while; words have taken to fade, but the principle hasn’t].

Now let’s get the Ministry of Culture of Spain involved (I am not really kidding) to sponsor a “ForoFlamenco” reunion in Madrid !!!

Edit: Btw.. i did get my share of punishment. One of the files i received contained -and I am sure unknown to the sender- a virus/bug which froze me up for a bit. It is all under control now, the bug's been arrested and is undergoing debriefing at Guatanamo.

domzo -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 11:08:02)

Blimey, just belatedly read this gripping drama... glad it's all over now.

Anyway here is the losers speech... (hastily adapted from the victory speech I prepared [;)] )

Alex/Batman, many congratulations on your triumph! Nice playing. [sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]

All other competitors, congratulations on your playing and hard work!

GJ, Irene, FLo, very big thanks for organizing this and all the effort you have put in.

A big thanks to all the judges for your time. It's great to have your feedback, especially individual comments on playing. (not to say scoring only isn't appreciated... I don't wish to appear ungrateful!)

And finally although I am sorry to lose, I know I deserved to... ALL the judges saw through my 'play it fast and no-one will notice that you haven't really got it down' strategy [:)]

I thought there was a risk of this, but I wanted to submit something as I'd said I would. However I wasn't really prepared for the amount of work the rest of you had put in so even more credit to you all.

You've got me curious now.
Did you get the guy off?

Or is he facing "Fifteen to Twenny in Sing-Sing"?

Well I will need to keep it vague. But it is the opposite of what you guessed. See, I am not really a criminal defense lawyer. In this case I had to “prosecute” on behalf of client, an employee who stole a few dollars, and would not accept my advice to simply resign and move on, faced with the conclusive evidence I had collected. Talk about hot-tempered. I was forced to get cops and DA involved and had to see a pretty girl ruin her reputation and record, for her stubborn denial and aggressive reaction. I am still very sensitive to human pain, and I felt it through my bones when I saw her handcuffed meekly covering her tears as she left the courtroom after she could not afford bail.

I have learned a long time ago, however, that those who do wrong, do not appreciate that they did, and often –as a defense mechanism- persuade themselves that they never even did the deed. Sometimes there is no way to save people from their own stupidity or insanity. But my failure shook me more than I thought it would. Hopefully that explains my rude and brusque reaction to your simple complaint.

Ron.M -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 7 2009 12:16:11)

Understood and appreciated gj,

Lawyers can only give the best advice and present the best case they can for whomever employs them. That's their duty to the profession.

I really feel for folk like Surgeons who after doing the best job they could, having to say to parents that they are awfully sorry, but their child just didn't make it.

Then having got cleaned up, they then have got to go home and be part of their own family's life and be in an up mood because their own son has just got picked for the school football team etc.

Then the next morning, they have to get up and do it all over again.

It never ceases to amaze me how organised and co-operative we all are in every job imaginable, just like cog wheels in a precision mechanism to make our villages, towns, cities and countries work the way they do.

cheers,

Ron

Hey Domzo, the only guys that will be remembered are the winner and the loser. So we are in good company. Everyone else is just mediocre and indistinguished in life. I won't quote Roosevelt but he comes to mind... [:D][;)]

HaHa Arash,

No, it wouldn't cause any problems here, or if you were working with a bunch of American guys, but I would strongly advise saying it in certain areas of the UK unless you like Hospital food. [:D]

yes, i have it in my PC, it is kind of a mix of satiric and shocking film about drug addicts ... but i have it only in german language....so, i guess what you want to say must have something to do with the scotish slang in the original film right? [;)]....

srshea -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Mar. 8 2009 13:18:31)

Aw, man. I think I was one of the first people to opt in to this challenge, but I just didn’t have any time to work on it. I picked it up a couple of times, but that’s it. I’ve been working pretty much non-stop on stuff I’m doing with some dancers, stuff that’s waaay over my head and very demanding of my time, and the need to focus on that always trumped working on the challenge. So, I feel like a bit of a heel for bailing on y’all, but I do want to offer a big ole to everyone involved- entrants, judges, organizers, the no-longer-mysterious-mystery-benefactor.... Great job folks!

Neil660 -> RE: BEGINNERS' CHALLENGE Entries Mp3 (Aug. 2 2015 4:01:17)

What a lovely bunch of people! I don't know any of you, but found myself really happy to read that gj hadn't left the forum! Like a flamenco soap opera :) Can't wait to get involved in the beginning challenges myself as I thrive in competition (never come first, but I always end up way ahead of my pre-competition self!)
