gj Michelob -> To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 22 2009 15:00:20)

I have the rare privilege of being the “first” to hear the recordings submitted for the Challenges. But have the burden of uploading and securing anonymity. In order to minimize the risk of errors please adhere to the simple recommandations:

SEND TO gjc@corradomontgomery.com
[the e-mail on file does not always support large files, such as music]

1. Please mark your file, or at least indicate clearly in the text of your e-mail accompanying the file, your Forum’s Name (eg: “gj Michelob”);
2. If you wish to pick your own Disney name, please do. Alternatively –as when your choice is already taken- Irene will baptize your file.
3. Please indicate whether you want me to ultimately disclose your identity (your Forum’s name, that is) or not.
4. In the event I cannot open the file, nor can I convert it in any way, I will let you know immediately. I will try to reply to all applicants to acknowledge receipt and confirm file is in good working order.
5. The reference bar should read: "Foro Flamenco" Intermediate or Beginner Challange"

Hence your submission should look like this:

JohnBoySmith@Hotmail.uk.void

This is from: “Enrique”
Sugg. Chall. moniker: “Donald Duck”
Choose one:
A. Please Disclose my Forum identity after scores are posted;
B. Do not Disclose my Forum identity under any circumstances;
C. Disclose my Forum identity only if I am the winner.

I'm just back from Spain (more of that later) and haven't even started working on the challenge yet

A few days left... by the New York midnight on February 24th (5am Zulu), my office will accept submissions;
by 10 am NY time on February 25th all submissions will be handed to the judges.

Footnote: here is a link to disney's characters to name your file, scroll down for all names in each movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Disney_characters

Well, my submission is winging it's way across the internet at 7:55 PST, to land in GJ's inbox safely I hope. If it sounds bad, then it was intercepted somewhere and edited without my knowledge or consent!

I give myself a 10/10 for effort but a 3/10 for compas so please just give me a passing grade judges!!

am i the only one who thinks that by participating we automatically agree to disclose our identities?

I agree too. I think forum identity should be disclosed after judging. However runners up may choose to not have their recordings posted.

...and the winner/ runner up definately agrees to have their identity disclosed, along with their scores and winning recording posted.

Edit - I think you should check with Flo on this. He mentioned something about the transparency of this challenge. This was not part of the rules.

xirdneH_imiJ -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 23 2009 8:50:37)

i sure would like to hear all recordings, that's more important than to know the names...but i can't even imagine a competition where you can't hear/see the end result and can't associate it with a (nick)name...it's not like we're giving full names with addresses...i think that by sending the files we should all automatically agree to disclose both the recording and the name...

gj Michelob -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 23 2009 10:57:03)

I agree with you. Maybe it is the "attorney" in me that requires a waiver before disseminating information.

So far no one has requested any such "privacy" and i will deal with it on a case to case basis.

As it stands now, i will start a new thread on the morning of Febr. 25th, and post all files; after the scores are in, I will post the name-conversion, save for exceptions, if any, requested by the participants.

? disagree. Music is a personal thing. I always want to know who is behind some playing. You can hear much of the personality in the playing.
Another example which maybe nly counts for me is. If I only hear the playing of nino miguel, it sounds traditional, advanced and very nice. But when knowing what a person he is (became), I ´m not anylonger interested in his music. I bought his book in past, but dont touch it.. coz it means bad luck. Well,.. i´m a bit supersitious. I would only play music of persons I like.

dude nino miguel's like a legend like. mental illness can strike at any time of life regardless of lifestyle or work. its just a shame it happened to such a handsome and taleneted guy such as miguel.

Yes I agree - he might have produced more wonderful playing had his life taken a different turn. In a funny way I'm almost more interested in him now that I know something about the complexities of his life. It makes him more 'real' to me.

I'm not sure what that says about me tho [&:][&:]

michel -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 24 2009 1:10:32)

I'll always be here to defend nino miguel and i agree with henry and ailsa..
he is duende himself and the most charismatic player i've ever seen, but it's just my opinion [:)] i'm impatiently waiting for the documentary 'bout his life (thanks for the link to the preview henry)

gj Michelob -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 24 2009 6:04:21)

8 files received as of this morning -7am here in SF. I expect that number to grow by the Eastern Time Midnight.

Ron, Florian... If i start a thread to post these Mp3 files, i will need to upload each file in a dedicated post, correct, no multiple files in one post?

Are we straight on the process?
tomorrow by 10 am (NY) i will start a thread and post all files on the forum?

Yeah gj,

Just start a new thread in the Uploads Forum and name it something like "Intermediate Challenge..ENTRIES"

Then in the message write the contestant's name, like...

Goofy

and then the mp3

THEN just reply to the post you've just made and add the next contestant....and so on...

Please don't anybody add any comments in this "Entries" thread.....Keep it clear so that it is easy for the Judges to navigate, or I may have to delete any other posts.
(I maybe lock the thread after all the entries are in)

Entries close at Midnight (EST) tonight!

GOOD LUCK!

cheers,

Ron

Florian -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 24 2009 7:04:59)

thats great Michelob..do it that way..on 1 thread ..different post per entri..

just writte a litlle a reminder in bold letters at the top incase anyone missed this..or is not aware

"Please no comments on the audios until after the results"

or something to that effect

thank you

Thank you Ron, however, I have advertised a different time-reference in this thread: New York (Eastern Standard)Time, as opposed to Greenwich Mean Time. The few additional hours allowance will equalize the timeframe for those living in the US, so all will have time after business hours today, to complete their recordings, not just those living in Europe.

Anything received after the NY's Midnight on my e-mail will be disqualified. Agreed?

Good Point Florian: I will accompany each post with the disclaimer:
PLEASE NO COMMENTS ON THE AUDIOS UNTIL AFTER THE RESULTS ARE ISSUED.
DO NOT REPLY TO THIS POST, IT IS FOR THE COMPETITION JUDGES ONLY.

Florian -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 24 2009 7:57:43)

excellent amigo..you dont need to put yourself through the trouble of writting it on every single post...just once at the top of the page is fine..but its up to you....you are allready putting in alot of effort we dont wanna impose too much on your time and effort

looks fair, i trust your judgement..

btw how are we going for subbmissions so far ? got an aproximate number ? ...just curios

I'm outraged!
This is typical American Imperialism!!! [:D][:D]

Yeah that sounds OK gj and it will give us European bums extra time to record after getting back from the pub. [:D]

cheers,

Ron

ha ha ha... love it!!! I too was tempted to make some geo-political comments, but why state the obvious?

Don't encourage people to record under the influence of alcohol, Ron, unless we want the falsetas on slide-guitar.

mrMagenta -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 24 2009 14:44:37)

ugh done. had to battle myself to actually send mine in. i was over my league on this one, but i'll keep practicing it even after the challenge.. it really reveals all my weak spots. hope i got the formatting right.

farteindj -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 24 2009 15:20:35)

Ugh. Me too, mr Magenta.[8D]
My first ever attempt to record my own playing of flamenco.
I'm exhausted, a little depressed that i couldn't make it better, and proud to take part in this challenge with you guys.

cheers
Farus

you guys are legends in my books...the scoring is just fun, litlle bit of entertainment for all of us ..you have both allready won...no judge can take that away from you (keep that in mind) ...thank you for taking part [;)]

its a different type of practice when you know someone will listen carefully to every aspect isnt it ?..its great..forces everyone to pay attention to everything as much as possible..and the set date...prevents you from uploading too soon ...the more time you have with it the more attention to detail you pay..

i am sure everyones gonne up a few steps in their own playing thanks to this..

hopefully this is the begining of many more audio uploads from you guys and others who havent previously uploaded...i look foward to it..u have broken the ice now [:D]

thanks to everyone that took part, everyone judging, the nice people that offered prizes..

i reckon about 80% of the members active at the forum are playing better then they were 1 month ago as a direct result of all these challenges

11 submissions so far.

Very true. Plus you have to face up with the player you really are, not the one you dream yourself to be when you're noodling in the comfort zone. Don't know if i liked it, really, but i guess it's neccesary if you want to get somewhere.

Maissam -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 24 2009 16:13:48)

all i have to say is that recording is STRESSFUL. Unless it's 100% perfect you just end up agonizing over the mistakes, like I'm doing now. it's horrible. how do you guys do it??

but it's good practice [:D] otherwise you don't bother to play something enough until it's perfect.

That really sums up the importance of this and any challenge.
Well put Farteindj

Hey guys,

I'm glad I'm not the only one with such experience.

Exactly!
It's sometimes hard to face it but the only way to get better.

[:)]
And I underestimated the falseta totally![:-] I think I respect Moraito even more after this challenge.

xirdneH_imiJ -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 25 2009 5:08:14)

i agree, it can be really frustrating...i recorded some stuff three days ago and was fed up because i couldn't get every little note perfect...so i kept trying, then i said no way i'm doing this any longer and two days later my patience was even thinner, so i used a recording from the previous session and just added a bit of reverb, i was going nuts i couldn't get it perfect...once the intro was fine and screwed up the next note, then the picado was really good but messed up the triplets in the end...so in the end i went with a mediocre version that has no obvious big mistakes but doesn't sound as good as i could play it i think...every time i pressed the record button i felt like i forgot everything, as in front of an audience, knowing how many people will hear this...i guess you have to play in front of other people many times to get used to it...

mrMagenta -> RE: To ALL challengers submitting files to gj Michelob (Feb. 25 2009 17:28:34)

I too felt jinxed, partly from recording but also because I ended up doing it between other pressing activities.. all the takes were getting messed up, and increasingly so. My tip to all challengers not used to this sort of thing: start RECORDING early, and not only earlier during the last day. And if you do a lot of re-takes, take breaks in between or you'll end up getting very tense and frustrated - you won't fool the microphone.

I would definitely say that my recording reflects the player I really am.
I consider keeping the nerves from taking over the performance an important guitar playing skill. when nervous, the blood is redirected to the large muscles and fingers go cold and stiff, not to mention what happens to the mind and focusing... besides technique, compas, and swing i REALLY have a problem with nerves... I'm embarrassed about it, i'd much rather be the relaxed and lyrical guy when playing the guitar.

This has been very humbling, but refreshing also. Count me in for the next challenge as well :-)
