Jim Opfer -> 75 Reyes Head (Feb. 12 2009 11:29:03)

I measured my 75 Reyes and drew this.
Thought someone out there might like to have it.

Cheers

Me Gusta!! the infamous Reyes headstock...Here is one that I designed for one of my guitars made for me by luthier Luis Mesquita of Toronto. The guitar was a Reyes copy and I based the headstock design on a Reyes (Blackshear's plan) and DeVoe headstock. I think Luis uses this exclusively on his guitars now.

I do not do this kind of stuff, but I can appreciate the hard work and craftmanship.
It is very nice for you to share your hard work.
This is why I love this forum

Nice photos Don, and I have to say that solid lining like the Miguel Rodriguez guitars would improve its volume. Also, I noticed that he doesn't use the Spanish foot, perhaps dove tail or something similar? But it is heart warming to know that this design has helped builders produce good results.

You never know if anything you do helps others but I'm glad this particular style has been good for many builders to try out.

I've been thinking about doing a plan for the 1968 Faustino Conde that Paco's brother, Ramon, used to own. But I haven't decided about the scale since the original is quite long. Perhaps I could take some ideas from the Reyes box style and scale length and do some fine tuning for the Conde top design to make it work better for the modern players.

I don't know if there would be much call for a project plan like this since it is an older Antiqua design of the school of players like Nino Ricardo, et al.

Let me know what you think.

I was always amazed when checking my guitar or other good guitars how extreme precise they can make such instruments... I mean Im talking here about measurements under a 10th of a millimeter.. Thats absolute awesome..

And whenever I visited the luthiers in spain,.. they have very small workshops with many things flying around and dirt... How come that they are able to produce such perfect guitars??

When I saw the plan for the reyes headstock that Jim posted, it came back into my mind.

Doitsujin -> RE: 75 Reyes Head (May 31 2009 1:13:21)

deleted coz it was a copy..

DonS -> RE: 75 Reyes Head (May 31 2009 9:15:48)

Tom, yes it sounded great and bright. He didn't use the spanish foot I think it was dove tail joint a' la Fleta. I thought it sounded very loud like a Fleta. Luis is a fine builder and very knowledgeable. I know a few luthiers using your Reyes plan..I actually have it displayed on my wall in my studio ;)

I like both Reyes and Conde guitars. I think it would be very interesting to hear a guitar with both styles. The thing I didn't like about the older 60's Conde's that I played was the lack of harmonics so fine tuning the top for modern playing is ideal. Reyes guitars are very impressive.

Yeah Doit,

That totally amazes me as well.

It's difficult enough to work with metal to that accuracy in a decent small well-equipped workshop.

How the hell do they do that with wood?? [:-][:-]

I would never have the patience...and just scream and break things! [:D]

cheers,

Ron

Lack of harmonics could be a playing scale issue more than top tuning but if you or other players are interested enough in this style, then the 60's Condes were about the same top pattern as the 1955 that Nino Ricardo owned and recorded with.

Anyway you look at it, the older Condes were not that easy to build and to have come out consistently sounding and playing as easily as the Reyes style. I would have to modernize the articulation and bring it up to speed but try and keep the old style voicing.

I've built a couple of those 68's that had a lot of Ricardo's sound. One was dead on it but I finally went too far with it and had to replace the top.

Hi!
Where did he get the rosette? Or did he make it himself?
Cheers,
Norman

DonS -> RE: 75 Reyes Head (Jun. 1 2009 10:20:04)

Tom, Nice idea with Reyes/Conde (Esteso) influenced guitar..are you working on the plans now?

It would be very interesting to hear this guitar and I think many guitarists here would be interested as well. I think the reason why many flamenco's like Conde and Reyes is due to the trebles which are very distinct. This is what I look for when I play a new guitar apart from playability of course.

Norman: I picked that rosette from his list..I think he purchased it from LMI or similar store. Its a nice rosette and really complimented the natural finish of the guitar.

The guitar is a good one but not an easy pattern to make come out right.

But there are some modifications I might be able to make that would give it propio sello.

The Reyes plantilla is almost the same as the Conde for a 655 mm playing scale and the idea would be to match the tops, as far as the plantilla goes, and see what I could do for the articulation; using the Conde top pattern and perhaps some ideas that Reyes is using for his top tuning.

I know this might sound difficult but once the plan is set, then builders might not have such a hard time building it.

Are any other players/builders interested in this idea for a new guitar plan?

Thanks - I'll check those again. I did, but didn't see it.
Norman

DonS -> RE: 75 Reyes Head (Jun. 1 2009 16:08:25)

Norman, you might have to contact him at LFMguitars.com to see where it was purchased.

Here is a photo of the rosette list that he gave me. I picked the one on the top right corner. There are some pretty nice ones.

Thanks much! That did it.

I recognized many of them on the board and knew that they came from different sources. I thought at least one was from David Schram. I followed his list of supplier links until I found it. It's from David Dyke in England.
Thanks again.
Norman

I'll call the GAL and see what they would like to do.

It could be an interesting project, even if I don't get paid for it :-)

DonS -> RE: 75 Reyes Head (Jun. 4 2009 8:28:42)

I'll buy a copy eventhough I'm not a builder...I like displaying these on my wall [:D][:)] keep us posted Tom!

Buenas Suerte - Don

ARE WE THERE YET!!?? [;)]

Actually, I have a mid-70's Esteso I was thinking of trying to copy until you mentioned this project. Mine is simply 5 braces, no bridgepatch, amazing, dry, punchy sound.

Is that what you're looking at?

Just curious.....
