Can anyone illuminate me who is Salero and who is Garbo?

Stu -> RE: Sabicas' Con Salero y Garbo (Jan. 30 2009 13:23:26)

no, but I just typed both into babelfish translator and salero is a "salt cellar"

so maybe they aren't people

Hmmmmm, you might be right for the first part. It's a Farruca, so it could be "With Salt Cellar and Garbo"???

well that's the complete translation in babelfish

.....but what the hell is a garbo???[:D]

My spanish dictionary defines 'garbo' as 'grace, charm, panache'

so 'With Salt and Panache' ?

Salero: spice, wit. Often shouted, like así se canta, eso es, etc. Was/is common jaleo in Cádiz. Garbo: grace, elegance.

Like Greta? Interesting.

I checked out Greta's original name: Greta Louisa Gustafsson. She was given the name Garbo at the age of 18 by Mauritz Stiller, then directing movies in Sweden, when he cast her in a small role. No confirmation that he chose the name because of her grace and elegance, nor any indication that he knew Spanish, but one can suppose that The Hand of Fate intervened.

One can hear cries of "¡Salero, salero!" on the classic 1928 recording by the superlative Cádiz cantaor Aurelio de Cádiz, with Ramón Montoya, Parasela CD, #CDP 3/656, 1996.

I thought they could be proper names as they have a first capital letter. But Garbo for "grace" is indeed a possibility. Thanks for the illumination.
