Axis of Evil Comedy

I think in these days where there is so much Hate and War und ugly things going on in "that Region",
it is good to fight all that with some Comedy and Humor.

These guys are all from the Middle East i.e. Arab, Palestinian, persian, etc. and they made this "Axis of Evil Comedy Tour"
a while ago. I would like to share some videos and hope you enjoy them.

Feel free to add Comedy Video or other stuff to this thread.

Aron Kader - about Arabs

Maz Jobrani - The Iranian :)

Aron Kader - about Bush

Maz Jobrani - Iran calls Amerika

Good stuff, Arash. I rented a similarly themed DVD with different guys a while back, but it was pretty lame and we turned it off after fifteen minutes. But these guys are good.

I like the Zidane bit, and I was actually just thinking about that Iranian/Persian thing a couple days ago!

RE: Axis of Evil Comedy (in reply to ddk

I must admit, I've never really "got" the word "axis".
Like, is it supposed to be the rod on which "evil" spins around?
But the word refers to several different countries...
Then maybe it should have been "axes" (plural)

I see there is a practically unused meaning of the word, as an "partnership", but to be honest, I've never heard it used before W.

At least old Ronnie's "Evil Empire" made instant sense and conjured up scenes from Star Wars...("Hey...I liked the movie so much, I named my defense strategy after it!")

Or "The Great Satan" from Bin Laden at least gives you an instant image.

"Axis" is not really a great word here IMO and sounds like one of those obscure metaphors that you get from folk who have steeped their lives in heavy Literature.

Which doesn't really fit my image of W....

I've always wondered who thought that word up to release in the statement?

So is Sevilla, Granada and Cadiz "The Axis" of Flamenco?

cheers,

Ron

Ron,

Not sure if I’m misreading you here, but I’ve always understood “axis of evil” to be a straight across the board conflation of Iraq/Iran/N. Korea with Germany/Italy/Japan, i.e. Axis of Evil=WW2 Axis Powers, and a kind of stab a sort of Rooseveltian/Churchillian show of authority…..

Happy belated Robert Burns Day, by the way!

Ron, maybe it's limited to American English, but near the end of the list of accepted definitions: an alliance of two or more nations to coordinate their foreign and miltary policies and to draw in with them a group of dependent or supporting powers.

Nah: experts in cold-war paranoia. Maybe it's supposed to sound like "the Axis," which refers to Nazi Germany, Japan and some other countries in WWII. (What, don't you say that in the UK?) I think they wanted to appeal to (=provoke fear in) a broad and reliable voter base. Maybe this isn't the best thread to carry on with the idea, but when I heard about "freedom fries"...

Hey Arash, good stuff, thanks for uploading that! I was going to post earlier to say that I enjoyed it, but I never got around to it and just let it go. I think they're doing a good thing, getting people to laugh like that, and I imagine they've run into problems at one point or another. Great example of turning tension into laughter!

Edit: Looks like Adam posted right before I did (and lot more eloquently, I might add!)

Thanks Jadamito y Normando,

Yeah, I had heard it in context of WWII before, ("Axis" Forces), but I always assumed it to be one of those many WWII "code" words and not really everyday English.

Now THAT I believe is George's own work and not gleaned from any heavy literature!

Thanks.

Nope. I honestly don't think GWB can claim intellectual-property rights of any of the best/worst buzzwords of the last eight years. Freedom Fries was the mind-fruit of some yahoo congressman, and even that was just a borrowing of old WW1 renaming silliness: Liberty Cabbage, Hot Dog, etc.

None of these guys had ANY original ideas! Not a one.

"There are known knowns...known unknowns...and unknown unknowns.."
Maybe the best quote from the regime IMO...

Yeah...Politicians...

Just a few moments ago on TV a Government minister just said "Britain leads the World in digital technology".

Oh yeah? Funny...I'd never have guessed it?
Maybe our best kept secret!

Maybe leads the World in World-Class Morris Dancing...but...gimme a break!

Say it long enough and fast enough, keeping a straight face and maybe folk will believe it?

cheers,

Ron

If we get into inane (or insane) quotes from America's recent leadership we'll have to start a whole new thread...

Yeah, there’s an interesting question in there, and a bit of a chicken/egg one, too. I don’t really know if the usage was obscure but already in place, or if the usage originates from “axis” being used in that WW2 context and then carrying on from there….

This reminds me of a word that’s very rarely used in English and always jumps out at me when I see it: “putsch”, the German word for coup d’etat. This is way over my head, etymologically, but so far as I know the usage of putsch in American English is inextricably, and almost exclusively, linked to its reference to the Munich Beer Hall Putsch. I really don’t know that it’s ever had a common usage outside of that context, and at any rate it’s definitely much less common that “coup” which is pretty standard.

Anytime I’ve seen this word used in a more general, non-Beer Hall, context, there’s always been some kind of ideological underpinning to it. I was once paging through a general American history written by a guy with conservative-leaning views, scanning the book, trying to find various controversial episodes in American history to see what sort of slant he put on his interpretation of certain events. The scanning came to a screeching halt when I saw a reference to the (impending, but ultimately unnecessary) impeachment of Richard Nixon as an attempted “putsch”! Takes a pretty “healthy” imagination to conflate the impeachment of Nixon with Hitler’s first, armed attempt at seizing power in Germany!
