Visit the States

My husband wants to "Go to America", but I can't get much out of him regarding where and why. I have never had such desires, but am willing to go along on the condition that he gives me a valid reason for choosing where we go and gives me some indication of how we are to pass our time.
He likes to sightsee - I don't.
He likes to drive and drive and drive - I don't.
He likes Jazz - I don't (BUT, he likes Flamenco)
I quite like Country and Bluegrass (he'll tolerate it).
I get bored "looking" - I like to be "doing" - he's more than happy to sit back and be entertained.
The list goes on...
Where shall we go, why and what shall we do when we get there? Ideas on the back of a postcard please. No prizes.

So opposites really do attract.. maybe go to a cool city where you can do as much or as little as you like, somewhere with decent culture and sights and beaches, I'd always thought san francisco would be good to visit then maybe you could drive down to mexico or something??? but what do I know, perhaps you'll get some response from some locals.

I lived on the southern tip of Florida, and that whole area has got something for every imaginable type of visitor. Gorgeous weather, serene beaches, rolling waves, restaurants/clubs you couldn't dream of, people from every culture imaginable, awesome wildlife, scuba diving, rock climbing, NASA, Disney World etc.

The only actually bad thing for a tourist would be the traffic, but seeing as you're in London, perhaps you're accustomed to traffic jams.

Good morning Val. I maybe a bit partial, but if you haven’t been to New York yet, this is the one city everyone must see or rather “experience” at some point. You will find every and anything in this City, within reasonable walking distance. Exciting at all times, New York really never sleeps nor does it ever cease to entertain. From the often bizarre spectacle of its citizenry, to its idiosyncratic architecture, NYC is a constantly developing phenomenon. Although, weakened by the economy, this is still the financial and commercial capital of the world, with all that necessarily derives from it: a condensed hyper life throughout what really is a small town “Manhattan”. While it would help to have maps and schedules for where and when events may be, you will find that one can simply stroll by scores of possibilities.
Rarely will you be bored by an empty street, as theaters, concert halls and music clubs, restaurants, bars and cafes, along with the endless windows of the most amazing retail operations will intensely hypnotize you. Every style of music or cuisine is performed by the finest. This city still represents the ultimate stage for any performer, artist or business, and you will experience its energy and intensity wherever you choose to go. When I walk the streets of my still favorite area, downtown (Greenwich Village, Soho, Meat-Packing) to put it with Dylan “there is music in the cafes and revolution in the air”.
However, unless you do not mind Antarctic weather, I would plan for the late spring. That is the time of the year I chose and came here 23 years ago…. and called it home ever since.

Well, without knowing what your husband wants, it sounds tough.

But there's lots of country and bluegrass in the sates, or so I hear. Once you settle on a location, we can help you better. Do you two need to do everything together?

Yip! I'm with gj on this one. NYNY.
Breakfast in the New York Deli, stroll into any bar on Bleeker Street and find an hour slip by listening to young hopefulls sing their heart out to the stranger who might just be casting for a Broadway show, stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge, watch the sun go down from the top of The Empire State Building, take the helicoptor trip out over the Hudson round Miss Liberty, ramp down the Guggenheim, watch air planes land in the East river........Magic. Just magic.

Well Jim, perhpas it is time for you to return to NYC. 'wouldn't mind hearing you on Flamenco (or its fusion) over dinner and learning a few of your classic falsetas. Yes New York is IT !!!

We've come to a decision - New York it is! Question now is WHEN, and once that's decided we have to organise it - something we're not too good at. Too many choices brings on the inertia.

You chose wisely....
I will gladly assist in your plans, Val, if you should need any additional information or insight.

Although i am too old to "club" i am a reliable resource for "clubbing, dining, nights-out and all-nighters in the city" but also for some daytime outings, Meuseum, Galleries, a romantic lunch in the park, or a brunch with a view, and of course about some of that stuff we cherish here.... "music".

Regardless, have tons of fun.
