Classical Pieces, Suggestions

Any suggestions for some short classical pieces to practice. I'm interested in
trying something different (i.e. other than flamenco). Something that will blend
in nicely with a bag of flamenco stuff.

Duh, of course it's wrong forum! :) I was just interested in any suggestions
from my "good" friends here at the Flamenco forum.

Something that's complimentary to my Flamenco stuff.

you can learn asturias.

It's the song classical guitarist play when they don't know real flamenco. it's become the standard, for some reason.

they also try to throw in rasgueados which sound horrible. maybe you can show them how it's done.

Ravel's Pavane pour une Infante Defunte. If you find some tab for it, pass it on.
It's the only classical piece I'd want to learn.

Recuerdos de la Alhambra is one of my favorite "non-Flamenco, Flamenco" pieces. Great practice for your tremelo and people seem to like the melody.

What's your level? How about a bit of Carcassi? You can work on your scales and arpeggios at the same time!

Anything by Agustin Barrios Mangore or Francisco Tarrega will lead you in the right direction. Some of their material is fairly difficult though, as will gladly demonstrate - speaking of which, La Cathedral happens to be one of my favorite pieces.

"Romance Antiguo" by Anonymous (Narciso Yepes played this as "Jeux interdits") isn't too difficult. I've uploaded the score and tab to the Tabs-section.

For "modern classic" I find deFalla as played by PdL has a definite "flamenco" touch (PdL really let's you hear the origins of the music).

Avoid classical composers that did not play guitar. Ie most all. it wouldn't fit along with your flamenco stuff, since flamenco is guitar music by guitar composers. Go for stuff like Villa Lobos, actual guitar music by a player. There are some others.

I took a stab at some Bach, but quit that pretty quick. :) Asturias I have
and that's kind of fun to play, but I only know a small part so far. I'll look
into Villa Lobos.

I occasionally try different stuff just for fun. The other day I was was
learning some Frank Gambale stuff.

Another day ... Tony Rice actually sounds pretty good on my Blanca ...

So far my favorite non-flamenco piece, that I can actually play ok, is
Jorge Morel's interpretation of Misionera, which is a really nice piece.

Wow, nice list Hem. Just one thing though - that first piece is by Joaquim Malats, the transcription is by Tarrega. (picky, picky).

Here's a good source for some classical tabs, including I think all the above-mentioned Albeniz and Romanza (the same one called "romance antiguo" elsewhere in this thread).

I second that. The best music for classical guitar was written for guitar and not transcribed from compositions fof other instruments. Albeniz is beautiful but it shows that it was written for piano. In addition to play Albeniz properly takes years and proper classical training. Youtube is ripe with people playing Asturiaz but very few actually play it right. De Falla also wrote for piano and to do the pieces justice like Paco did you should be Paco.
La Vida Breve which is a genious composition is really a duet and loses a lot in solo performance. I have a sheet for it for solo guitar (which I can share) but my lack of technique and talent make playing that a complete joke.

Picking classical piece to learn is similar to picking apppropriate flamenco piece. If this you first attempts perhaps La Barrossa will not be the best thing to pick. In classical La Catedral is along the same lines. So is Aljambra and perhaps even Villa Lobos. I consider his compositions fairly difficult.

There are beautiful pieces by Sor that are not simple studies but are also very achievable and sound beautiful on guitar. There are also some by Aguado. Rondo in Am is great but fairly difficult as it develops. There are Ponce pieces written for Segovia specifically, those are great.

Bach is beautiful but there is nothing easy about that, especially in pieces with counterpoint.
