Going to Jerez with guitar

Hola tod@s,

I know I don't post here much - generally as I don't feel I have much useful to add tbh.. but now I'm in a dilemma and wanted to ask you lot what you'd do - I've searched the foro and found some useful paperwork and good advice about going by plane with a guitar, but wanted to ask something a bit more specific..

I'm planning on going to the festival in Jerez in March and will probably have to fly Ryanair as I'm pretty skint. I want to get some guitar lessons while I'm there (am researching whether Moraíto would do one!) and don't know what to do:

I've got a Burguet Especial model which I love (gorgeous (muy flamenco) sound, light, low action etc) and which is pretty priceless to me, and I've got an Alhambra classical model 3C which I really don't love very much, to put it nicely. I'll have insurance for whichever I take but the Burguet is pretty irreplaceable to me. And I don't really want to have to play the 3C over there, depriving my lovely Burguet of the chance to see Jerez.

So is there a guaranteed safe way to take my beautiful Naranjita with me, or should I take the other to be safe? I heard of someone who bought an extra seat for a guitar and still had problems getting it on a Ryanair flight though I think that was a while ago... I'll have exactly £0.00 spare so won't be able to buy one over there. I've got a good case - a cream fibreglass one.

So, what would you do?

There are fibreglass or carbon fibre cases, similar to cello cases that are becoming very popular. Best to get one with shoulder a strap or straps.

Can cost as much as you guitar though...

First of all.

Going to Jerez with a classical guitar...........

I think you can pay Ryanair 60,-€ to get the guitar in the hold and it should be safe

The official RyanAir policy states:

They charge £20 for trasport in the hull.

However, on my last RyanAir flight from Sevilla to Frankfurt in Oct. I saw a passenger with a (smallish) guitar in a gig-bag that went in the overhead locker, and obviously passed as hand-luggage ...

I took my Manuel Bellido to Malaga some years ago and it survived the hull without any problems ...

Personally, I'd book an extra seat if i could afford it

I once had my classical in the hold, when all the luggage went walkabout for 3 days. The guitar travelled the world during this time and arrived home VERY, VERY cold and sounding awful. It played back in after a couple of days though. Since then, I heard somewhere that you should lower the tension on the strings for airline transport. I've done that ever since and have never had further problems. A normal hard case has been fine, sent through the "special" carousel with a FRAGILE sticker.

Yeah, I guess it would be a bit of a faux pas...

Am too scared to try the hold so will have to pay for that extra seat or try to 'gatecheck' it.. I seem to have been looking for flights for hours now - am going to give up and chill out now. Thanks for all the advice - hopefully I'll have some good stuff to post when I come back,
