Flamenco guitar patterns

For those of you that know me personally or through my Flamenco Handbooks, you know I love to play and teach many different guitar patterns for each palo. To me that brings a source of joy and is so much more interesting than the limited amount taught by teachers and mainstream music literature.

Remember many areas of Spain have a particular sound. Just one concept is that there are over 100 different types of Soleares. Contrary to what a few flamenco guitar students have told me (from their teachers) “there is only one version of (fill in palo name here) and it is the one my teacher taught me”!

One source of flamenco patterns for Bulerias, Soleares, and Alegrias in the Morón de la Frontera Style is available from Evan Harrar and I highly recommend it to everyone. Click on the Rhythm link for more information once you go to Evan’s web site.

Tom, thanks for this link! I did not even know it existed. I will buy those books and lessons, as I'm alway on the lookout for teaching aids.

I'm really interested in playing more chords up and down the fretboard rather thatn in the first position only.

Do you have Chuck Keyser's materials? Chuck has a great way to teach chord inversions (positions). It is simple and painless and once you see it you can teach others. That is the sign of a good teacher - one who can teach you to teach.

There are times when you want to play chords up the neck of the guitar. When you get to that point it is time to start looking, asking questions and thinking, "where do I start"?

Tom, I just got those 4 CDs about a week ago, and I have looked at them, but not all of the material. He is a very interesting and laid back type of guy from what I can see from his vedios.

I have been using parts of his material when I want to study something. For example, the tangos sample I provided, I looked, read, and listened to everything he had to say about tangos. Now I'm doing the same for the fandango de huelva that I'm working on. If I could just get that damn thumb falseta on the 1, 2, 3, strings down, I will be done with it!!

Where on Chuck's CD does he talk about the chord inversions? I'll have to look at that.

When I get a chance I will look for the chord information. I printed out all the information on the CD's (that killed several trees!) and had Kinkos bind it. I think I have five books. The big problem with Chuck's material is finding what you want at your fingertips. I have provided a few memo stickers on my bound information at key points.

Chuck's examples with video are really a great learning tool. You can see how he plays the music and this really helps. I have both Chuck's original VHS and CD versions. It is such a great source of information about flamenco.

One thing about Chuck's videos is, during his bulerias solo demonstration, he made a compas mistake by missing a few notes, just smiled at the camera, got back into compas and finished the song! ;>)

To me, that is what flamenco guitar is all about; make a mistake and keep on going!

I sometimes find myself trying to get it 'JUST RIGHT EVERY TIME', and that just does not work, at least for me! Playing a piece of flamenco just right would eventually turn into classical flamenco, if you know what I mean!
