What to do now? 
So, I just had a friend of mine who is a fabulous luthier here in BC, Canada, build me a negra that I've been dreaming about for ages! Sadly, I had a bit of a financial disaster over the Summer and now that it is just a week away from completion, I think I may have to tell him to sell it to another buyer.

So, I'm faced with the question of what to do now? because I NEED to have a proper flamenco guitar (I've been playing flamenco for over 10 years now and have never owned a genuine "flamenco" guitar) so, I'm considering buying a cheap Yamaha CG171SF to at least console myself a bit.

I've gathered that in the under $1000 price range, the Yamaha is actually the best thing going. What thinks you flamenco folk? is this true, or is there anything better in the cheapo range?

The CG171SF is the best guitar in that price range barring a Navarro student model, but the Navarro goes for around $800 USD new. The Yamaha can be had for $300 USD new.

Oh Never mind...now I see that there's tons of discussions already here about the cheapo guitar subject.

How about this for a question: would I be completely ridiculed if I showed up to Carmen de Las Cuevas in Granada to study flamenco guitar with a Yamaha!!??

No, they are nice people and would focus on your playing and not on your guitar.

Another thing: If this luthier is your friend, cant he wait half a year while you get your things sorted out? It would maybe be the cheapest and best in the long run.

Nice to know that they are cool people at CDLC and wouldn't care so much about the guitar. I always got the feeling that it would be a great place to study. I've been getting their newsletters for the past 10 years! I had a trip there planned long ago, but alas, wife, kids, etc.. happened! So I'm planning to go next Spring finally!

As for my luthier friend and the guitar; I would love for him to hold off selling it and wait for me to get my act together, but I know that he too has a family to support and I don't want to screw up his situation by putting him out of pocket. I'm sure as a luthier, that when you custom build a guitar, you are counting on the funds to be coming in as soon as it is completed.

Anyway, if I'm meant to have it, it will work out somehow!!

More or less.. and fortunately the huge majority pay right away, but flexibility is a good word and sometimes you have to wait for a while.
