Encuentro DVD rhythms

Anyone here familiar with the Encuentro Productions DVDs? I have the Paco Serrano DVD which has a lot of good material, but was a bit frustrated that in the Bulerias, the falsetas are transcribed but only a sample rhythm is written out. As a low-intermediate player, I’m not able to figure out the rhythms myself. Has anyone tabbed these by any chance? I’m sure it would be pretty easy to pick up for a more advanced player. I wonder why Encuentro didn’t do it. Anyway, I’m also wondering if only samples of rhythms are transcribed in the other Encuentro DVDs (especially Moraito) or are the whole pieces written out? Or is the series supposed to be just falsetas?

I understand your frustration. Unfortunately, I think it is assumed that compas is so fundamental, that if you are able to handle the falsetas of that level, that the basic compas strumming that goes with them is "easy" to pick up. In other words, if you can't handle the compas strumming just by seeing it done, then perhaps you need to be working on just that before diving into those falsetas.

For the record, the Moraito book has lots of the rhythm guitar compas that goes between the falsetas transcribed. Understand, a lot of it is like one chord with rhythm slashes written for most of the compas, and the actual technique of doing that type of strumming is not so simple as "chunka chunk" as it reads.

Try the Merengue De Cordoba 1 DVD, he plays some basic rhythm for each palo, rasgeos, and then some variations on the chords, rasgeos etc., with only the occasional little fills and falsetas, and it's all transcribed. I'd say this will give you a good solid rhythmic base, and you can then add in falsetas etc. from other sources.

People have said his technique is a little ropey and/or old fashioned, but I'd say his material is definitely "post-Paco" even if his technique is not at 'monstruo' level, and there's nothing wrong with learning 4 finger/5 stroke rasgeo as well as the more "modern" 3 finger/4 stroke rasgeo (which he also uses) - Just don't play over the sound hole!

BTW he taught Paco Serrano, as well as Jose Antonio Rodriguez and Vicente Amigo, and their technique didn't turn out too bad!

Thanks for the good advice Ricardo and Mark. I'm going to downgrade myself from a "low-intermediate" to a "high-beginner" player and work on my compas. Like they say: you need to learn the alphabet before you can write like Shakespeare.

I think these are very useful for learning some modern compas strumming
