Olé San Mig! (I think?)

Hi,
I was just enjoying a cold San Miguel when I noticed on the back label it said "Brewed in the UK by Scottish & Newcastle breweries."

Oh well, I suppose it makes sense rather than flying bottles of liquid all over the world.
And it did taste excellent as usual, though it did spoil a bit of the magic.

So whatever next?

Kate having a Newcastle Brown Ale, brewed in Granada!

(Ees el wan an' onlee ...eef joo arr jard enoff sí...) *

cheers,

Ron

* Best enjoyed outdoors in the middle of Winter at 1 Celsius and a high wind-chill factor, wearing only jeans and a T-shirt like the real Geordies do..

It's like drinking Guinness brewed in China. Have you come across one of those?
Good to be back.

Ole! San Miguel! That is a popular beer in the Philippines. The company was established in Manila, Philippines back in the late 1800's through a royal grant from Spain..then breweries started popping up all around Asia and recently in Spain. Here is some history if you guys are interested...all this beer talk is making me thirsty!

We have a yuppy wine bar here in sunny Beverley that sells draught San Miguel. It advertises itself as a 'Tapas Bar' but the only live music they ever has is New Orleans jazz. Most odd!

I had always thought San Miguel originated in the PI.

So it's originally from Spain?

Yeah San Miguel did originate in PI. Apparently the brewery in Spain opened in 1997 but now is not directly affiliated with the one in PI.

Don,
This has really confused me!
I first went to Spain in 1969 and San Miguel seemed to the beer of choice then.
On the back it said something like "Fabricado en Madrid".
Subsequent visits proved the same, judging by the bottles sitting on the tables and the bar signs.
So I had the impression it was Spanish, but obviously you are right since I looked at their Website that you posted and it's the same stuff.

Maybe it's just good marketing, but folk here in the UK associate San Miguel with Spain.

Here is the text on the back of a bottle I'm drinking just now...

"From Seville to Barcelona, the uniquely refreshing taste of San Miguel is at the heart of a great night out.
Now, Spain's most loved export is enjoyed by millions the world over.....Salud!"

Further down, in the small print it says...

"Brewed in the UK by Scottish & Newcastle, 2-4 Broadway Park, Edinburgh."

Well, I suppose now that Condes aren't made by Conde nor Ramirez by Ramirez nor anything by anyone in particular (esp in the consumer goods market!), then that would be just about normal IMO...

cheers,

Ron

Because it's about the only one you can get there!

Ron, Yup....like you said it's not logical to import beer. I think taste has got a lot to do with it. I notice some beer here in the US (german etc) are made in NYC!

Estevan: I haven't been to PI in 27 years but my uncles (big drinkers) love San Miguel beer or budweiser when they are here visiting. I dislike BUD...big time. Maybe because it's American and sick of it. I've talked to a few europeans that love Budweiser cause of the taste and that it's American funny how that works out. I only buy imported beer or Red Tail Ale my personal favorite brewed in Mendocino County, California. If you guys can get your hands on some...highly recommended.

My other uncles in Toronto LOVE Labatt's Blue made in Canada...it tastes okay to me.

Salud!!
Don

That's funny Don...I haven't been to RP in 4 years! But that's the only place I would drink San Miguel - because it's all you can get, it's hot and sticky and you're hanging out with the relatives.
That Red Tail sounds like real beer; can't get it here, but there are other small breweries that make good stuff.
I feel the same way about Labatt's Blue (and Molson Canadian) that you do about Bud! The reason they (along with Corona and Coors Lite) are popular is because, as my friend the professor says "most people don't like the taste of beer".
