Gathering for flamencos in St. Regis...

This is Montanadonn. I have a fly fishing resort in western Montana on the banks of the Clark Fork River and I am surveying the idea of a flamenco gathering here in the first week of November 2004 for all who are interested in exchanging any and all aspects of the flamenco art. Guitarists, cantaors, and dancers could all participate if so inclined to come. Together we could set up an events schedule in a proposed 5 or 7 day session. The only responsibilities would be for bedding costs (sleeping bags are fine if you want) and propane for heating, some cooking and clean up. Most of the food would be from the local restaurants about 10 miles away. The resort is located 10 miles from St. Regis Montana, on the river in the mountains of western Montana and will accommodate 14 people. Airports are in Missoula, Montana and Spokane, Washington where each is about 1 and 1/2 hours drive away. The cost for this will be minimal and it would be a great chance to meet other enthusiasts, make new friends, and learn some techniques and material on personal basis. Some will ask what is minimal. About $300 each for a week of lodging should cover it. That would cover most of the expense on my part. Why am I doing this? Just because I think it would be a lot of fun and very positive for everyone interested in learning a bit more in their favorite passion-Flamenco- I would appreciate any and all input and suggestions on this one- Donn Dale--"Big Donn"

Donn,
Sounds like a real adventure and I have heard how beautiful Montana is.

Two thoughts:

1. With all that was on offer in Jerez, I think there were 6 members from this forum that made it and three of those already lived there - none flew in from the US. You'll need to market the idea widely.

2. Getting some organisation around the thing, finding players of quality who can teach - one or two would do it, any singer who is prepared to make the trip etc. You may find dancers on other forums - not many here.

If I can sort my visa I am sorely tempted.

If there is enough interest, I would be happy to host a web page here to advertise and take enquiries.

Donn,

I agree with Simon. With only a handful of flamenco enthusiast in your area, it will take a bit to draw folks.

You may be aware of the Flamenco in the Redwoods workshop that is held in Northern California. I think they get about 150 people to it. I know you are not thinking at that level, but it may give you some ideas. Here are a few links.

Also, a very good flamenco guitarist that would be high on the list to get would be Mark Taylor from the Bay area. He is an excellent accompanist and I think this would be down his ally. Here’s a link.

Donn does indeed live in God's country. I was in his neck of the woods last year and I have never seen so many deer and wild turkey.

Weird, someone in a PDL mask probably clubbed them all to a grisly mush.... out of compas so as not attract attention

We've had a couple of wild Stags come into the garden in the Winter.
But I'd rather them come to us rather than us go to them, if you know what I mean.
We once walked an old path through Royal Deeside, an ancient wild land, full of "standing stones" and "stone circles", dating back to the great Caledonian forest, and arriving at a small stream in the middle of nowhere both of us (my wife now, girlfriend then) felt suddenly uneasy for no reason.
I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck tingling.
The atmosphere felt positively crackling with some sort of electricity.
The place had some sort of strange "fairy ring" feeling to it that made you feel that you were in contact with a place that made your short time on earth seem paltry in comparison with it's own past.
(I quickly put out the joint and have never smoked the stuff again LOL!)
No...really I was "straight" at the time, just a nice walk on a hot summer's day.
Once we got about 100 metres away the feeling dissapated and got back to normal countryside.
I'm a scientific based guy, but there are some pretty unexplainable and "old" things out there.
So would rather have a "knees up" in a peña in Jerez anyday!
Can do without the weird stuff! LOL!
